It’s become a pattern: every week, a new trailer for Avengers: Doomsday appears in theaters before showings of Avatar: Fire and Ash. For a short time, it’s only available to see in theaters or through blurry, unofficial copies online. Then, the full, high-quality version is released on the internet. This cycle keeps repeating.
The initial preview showed Chris Evans reprising his role as Steve Rogers in Avengers: Doomsday, even though his character retired in Avengers: Endgame. The next preview highlighted Chris Hemsworth as Thor, who was already confirmed to be returning for the fifth Avengers film.
The latest teaser is generating the most excitement yet, bringing back familiar faces from the X-Men films: Patrick Stewart as Professor X, Ian McKellen as Magneto, and James Marsden as Cyclops. Fans will especially notice Cyclops sporting his iconic costume from the 1990s, designed by artist Jim Lee, for the first time.

In case you missed them, here are the two previous Avengers: Doomsday teasers.
The upcoming Deadpool & Wolverine movie will feature several returning X-Men, including Kelsey Grammer as Beast, Alan Cumming as Nightcrawler, Rebecca Romijn as Mystique, and Channing Tatum as Gambit, though they weren’t in the first trailer.
Besides Evans, Hemsworth, and the actors from the X-Men movies, the cast now includes Anthony Mackie, Paul Rudd, Simu Liu, Tom Hiddleston, everyone from the Thunderbolts and The Fantastic Four: First Steps films, and Robert Downey Jr. playing Doctor Doom in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Given how many stars are involved, it seems likely this movie will be incredibly long – possibly around fourteen hours!
Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to open in theaters on December 18, 2026.
Marvel Characters Who Aren’t in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’

Nick Fury
As a huge MCU fan, I was really surprised when I saw the cast list for Doomsday and didn’t see Samuel L. Jackson’s name! Nick Fury’s been in so much – twelve movies including all the Avengers films, plus his own Secret Invasion series on Disney+. It’s possible he’ll still make an appearance – remember that post-credit scene in Infinity War? But if he does, it probably won’t be a major role, which is a bit unexpected given how important Fury usually is.

Hulk (And She-Hulk)
Mark Ruffalo, who has played the Hulk in every Avengers movie and many other Marvel projects, wasn’t included in the cast of Avengers: Doomsday. He recently made a guest appearance in the Disney+ series She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, starring Tatiana Maslany. Given the scale of a battle with Doctor Doom – potentially involving alternate dimensions – you’d expect the MCU’s strongest heroes to be involved, but neither She-Hulk nor Hulk are currently confirmed to appear in the film.

Red Hulk
The Marvel Cinematic Universe has a new Hulk: Harrison Ford as Red Hulk, appearing in Captain America: Brave New World. While the movie’s ending doesn’t guarantee a lot of Hulk action for him, the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday looks like a massive threat – Doctor Doom and potentially a reality-bending incursion. That kind of danger calls for every Hulk available, regardless of their past or what color they are.

Doctor Strange and Wong
Most of Marvel’s heroes haven’t faced many threats from alternate universes, with Doctor Strange being a notable exception thanks to his recent film, Multiverse of Madness. Surprisingly, neither Benedict Cumberbatch nor Benedict Wong (who plays Wong, the current Sorcerer Supreme) appears in the new movie. While Marvel actors often downplay their roles before a film comes out, Cumberbatch has stated he isn’t in it, but will play a key part in the sequel, Avengers: Secret Wars. Only time will tell if that’s true.

America Chavez
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness introduced America Chavez, a character from Marvel Comics who can open portals to different universes. In a high-stakes movie like Avengers: Doomsday, that ability could feel like an easy fix to any problem – a bit like a ‘deus ex machina.’ Perhaps that’s why actress Xochitl Gomez wasn’t included in the Doomsday cast. But if she doesn’t appear in a movie where the entire multiverse is at risk, it makes you wonder if we’ll see her character again at all.

Tom Holland’s Spider-Man
There’s a lot of talk that Tom Holland will appear in Avengers: Doomsday, and he’s definitely preparing for another Spider-Man movie made with Marvel Studios. Either his role in Doomsday wasn’t revealed to avoid spoilers, or he won’t be a major part of that story until the Secret Wars movie—which, considering the rumors about Secret Wars, actually seems more likely.

Captain Marvel
The official cast list for Marvel’s Doomsday now includes Kelsey Grammer as Beast. Fans last saw Beast in a scene after the credits of The Marvels, where he was talking to Monica Rambeau, who had traveled through a multiverse portal to a reality where the X-Men live. (That sentence probably sounds confusing if you haven’t seen any Marvel movies!) Because of that scene, it’s not surprising to see Beast in Avengers: Doomsday. However, it is strange that Grammer is in the film while none of the main characters from The Marvels – the movie that set up his return – have been announced as appearing. It’s especially odd that Captain Marvel isn’t listed, considering her recent focus has been protecting Earth from threats from space. Perhaps there will be another cast announcement with more names added soon?

Ms. Marvel
Ms. Marvel was key to the events in The Marvels and the multiverse issue, and she’s also been preparing to form her own team, the Young Avengers. This could tie into future Avengers movies. Marvel might be holding her and the team back for Secret Wars, or they could eventually get their own Young Avengers film, which hasn’t been announced yet.

Rocket Raccoon (and the new Guardians of the Galaxy)
Look, I was sad to see the original Guardians team wrap up in Vol. 3, especially since some of the actors, like Dave Bautista, seem done with Marvel. But the movie did set up a new team with Rocket and Groot leading the way, which gave me hope. I know getting those big-name actors back for even a quick cameo might be tough, either because they’re too busy or it’s a cost issue. Still, the Guardians were so important in Infinity War and Endgame that I honestly expected to see them pop up in Doomsday too. It just felt like something was missing without them.

Deadpool and Wolverine
As a huge Marvel fan, I was really excited to hear about all the X-Men actors joining the cast of Doomsday. But honestly, I was a little surprised that Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman weren’t among those announced, especially since everyone figured they’d be in it with Deadpool & Wolverine. It doesn’t mean they won’t show up, just that Marvel hasn’t officially said anything yet. Considering this movie already boasts a massive cast of 27 stars – and let’s be real, Reynolds and Jackman don’t come cheap – maybe they’re saving them for a bigger role in Avengers: Secret Wars? That would be pretty epic.

The First Class X-Men
The X-Men actors appearing in Doomsday (with the exception of Channing Tatum) are all from the original X-Men films released by Fox. Surprisingly, none of the actors from the later prequel movies – including stars like James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Nicholas Hoult, and Jennifer Lawrence – are involved. Given that Doomsday is a multiverse story, it allows for many different versions of the X-Men to appear. This could lead to a fun surprise in Secret Wars, potentially featuring the original cast in Doomsday and the prequel cast in the sequel – a really interesting twist!

The Wasp
I was completely shocked to hear that the Wasp wasn’t originally going to be in the next Avengers movie, especially since she and Ant-Man are two of the few heroes who’ve actually faced Kang. Now that the film is titled Doomsday, it seems like only Paul Rudd is officially confirmed to return. It makes me wonder if Evangeline Lilly’s involvement is being kept secret, or if Marvel drastically changed their plans when Robert Downey Jr. came back on board. It feels like things have really shifted!

Moon Knight
It’s surprising that none of the heroes from Marvel’s Disney+ shows seem to be in the cast of Doomsday. It feels strange that not even Hawkeye made the cut – seriously, not even Hawkeye?! – but that appears to be true for now. I’m guessing Jeremy Renner will probably have a smaller role somewhere in the film. Meanwhile, Moon Knight has ties to gods and mystical creatures, and Oscar Isaac is a major star in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Plus, Moon Knight was even an Avenger! It would be great to see him involved!

Daredevil
Charlie Cox’s Daredevil might be a bit too grounded for a huge team-up movie like Avengers: Doomsday. However, Cox’s character, Matt Murdock, is appearing more and more throughout the Marvel Cinematic Universe. We’ve seen him in Spider-Man: No Way Home and She-Hulk, and now he’s leading one of the best Marvel series on Disney+, Daredevil: Born Again. It seems even Doctor Doom doesn’t require legal representation.

Literally Any Member of the Eternals
The movie Eternals ended with a title card promising “Eternals will return…” but that now seems unlikely. There’s been no news about a sequel for years, and the recent Captain America: Brave New World movie, which featured a key element from Eternals, didn’t mention the team at all. They’re also absent from the cast list for the upcoming Doomsday film, despite being a logical fit for a story about cosmic-level threats. It’s disappointing news for fans of characters like Druig, but perhaps there’s still hope.
