The Odyssey trailer reveals the one thing Christopher Nolan has never done

The new two-minute trailer for Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film, The Odyssey, offers fans a first look, and surprisingly shows something he hasn’t done in his nearly 30 years as a filmmaker.

Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film, The Odyssey, boasts a remarkable cast. Matt Damon will play the legendary hero Odysseus, who faces a decade of war at Troy and another ten years struggling to return to his home island of Ithaca. He’s joined by a stellar group of actors including Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Jon Bernthal, Mia Goth, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, John Leguizamo, Zendaya, and Charlize Theron.

This film retells the classic Greek story originally written by Homer. Director Christopher Nolan filmed it over 91 days in various international locations, including Scotland, Iceland, Morocco, Greece, and Italy.

Christopher Nolan is known for shooting his films in real locations around the globe, avoiding studio sets whenever possible. However, the trailer for his new movie, The Odyssey, shows something he’s never attempted before, and it could significantly impact how films are made.

Footage released on December 22nd offered a first look at creatures like the Cyclops, along with an army of undead soldiers. This marks the first time Christopher Nolan has included actual monsters in his films. While previous movies, like Batman Begins, featured frightening imagery – such as Scarecrow’s visions – and some might consider the Joker from The Dark Knight a monstrous figure, this is a new direction for Nolan.

I’m really excited about The Odyssey because it sounds like we’re finally going to get classic movie monsters from Nolan! That’s a big deal, since he usually sticks to more realistic stories. He’s amazing at blending action, drama, and sci-fi – think Interstellar and The Prestige – but The Odyssey seems like he’s pushing even further into something totally different.

Okay, so I was rewatching the new trailer, and at 1:13, you get a quick look at the Cyclops in his cave – seriously creepy! Odysseus and his crew are totally horrified, which is understandable. Then, near the end, this group of soldiers in black armor just emerges from this black sand beach. It looks like they filmed that part in Iceland, which makes sense because of all the volcanic beaches there. It’s a really cool visual!

In addition to all of that, the film The Odyssey will feature several mythical creatures and characters. Zendaya will portray Athena, the goddess of wisdom and war, who guides and protects Odysseus. Charlize Theron will play Circe, a powerful witch who transforms Odysseus’s men into pigs when they land on her island, Aeaea.

Several other actors haven’t had their roles officially announced yet, including Jovan Adepo and James Remar from the It: Welcome to Derry series, as well as Samantha Morton, Elliot Page, and Logan Marshall-Green. Keep an eye out for unexpected appearances from characters inspired by the original Iliad and Odyssey stories.
