There’s a lot of anticipation for The Odyssey, but the new Christopher Nolan film might face a significant challenge.
Universal Pictures will release the film The Odyssey in U.S. theaters this summer. Written and directed by Nolan, the movie is an adaptation of the classic Greek story by Homer.
I’m so excited about the movie, The Odyssey! The cast is absolutely incredible – it’s got everyone from Matt Damon and Tom Holland to Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Zendaya, and Charlize Theron. Seriously, even Jon Bernthal, Jon Leguizamo, Himesh Patel, Mia Goth, Elliot Page, and Travis Scott are all in it, plus Bill Irwin and a ton of other amazing actors! I can’t wait to see them all together.
What is the potential problem with The Odyssey?
It’s exciting to see such a large cast in Nolan’s new film, but there’s a risk it could feel crowded. The story seems to center around Damon’s character, Odysseus, so he’ll likely be the most prominent. We don’t know much about the plot yet, making it hard to predict how much screen time other actors will have. With so many famous faces, it’s possible their appearances could pull focus from the story.
It’s typical for director Christopher Nolan to gather a large ensemble cast for his films. This approach can be incredibly successful, as seen with Robert Downey Jr.’s award-winning performance as Lewis Strauss in Oppenheimer. However, the same film also features actors like Rami Malek and Dane DeHaan in brief appearances that feel more like cameos—moments where the audience simply recognizes a familiar face without adding significant depth to the story.
Look, I still think Oppenheimer is fantastic, and I’m hopeful The Odyssey will be too. But I’m a little worried about how The Odyssey handles its cast. Since it’s set right after the Trojan War, it’s dealing with a lot of historical figures. If it’s anything like Oppenheimer, where a famous face pops up for just a few minutes and then disappears, it could end up feeling like a series of quick appearances instead of a solid, engaging story. I really want to be able to connect with the characters and the plot, and I’m hoping it doesn’t feel disjointed.
The Odyssey arrives on July 17, 2026.
