The first trailer for Christopher Nolan’s new movie, The Odyssey, is now available, but it’s already causing discussion. Though people are excited for the film, many have expressed disappointment with how the trailer was made.
The new film stars Matt Damon as Odysseus and tells the story of his epic and perilous voyage back to his homeland following the Trojan War. In the trailer, Odysseus declares, “After years of war… nothing could stop my men… from getting home… not even me.” Anne Hathaway plays his wife, Penelope, and Tom Holland appears as their son, Telemachus.
The trailer suggests the movie will be epic in scale, showing Odysseus and his crew facing numerous difficult challenges on their journey home. While the trailer focuses on certain characters, other prominent actors like Robert Pattinson, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o, Charlize Theron, Jon Bernthal, and John Leguizamo are not featured in the released footage.
The recently released two-minute trailer is getting a lot of attention because director Christopher Nolan used new IMAX technology while filming. However, fans were quick to complain about the quality of the online version. Many expressed frustration in the comments, with one user exclaiming, “Why isn’t this in 4K?!” Another added, “1080p and a cropped screen? Seriously, IMAX? Do better!”
People online were quick to point out that despite the movie being filmed with IMAX cameras, the trailer was released in a lower 1080p resolution. One user joked about the disconnect between using top-of-the-line equipment and then not delivering a high-quality trailer. Others expressed disappointment that the trailer wasn’t in the wider 1.43:1 aspect ratio expected for IMAX releases.
The Odyssey is set for a theatrical release on July 17, 2026, in the UK and the US.
