WARNING: Spoilers Ahead! This conversation includes revelations from the Season 2 finale, “Buyer’s Remorse,” currently streaming on Netflix.
In its final moments, Season 2 of “The Night Agent” elegantly set up a Season 3.
In the series titled after his character, undercover agent Peter Sutherland (played by Gabriel Basso) has been assigned a fresh mission. As Jacob Monroe (Louis Herthum), an influential information broker who thinks Peter is under his control because he leaked data that influenced the election, suspects Peter’s loyalty lies with him, Peter will act as if he is indeed controlled to gather intel on Louis. His superior, Catherine (Amanda Warren), advises him, “He thinks you’re his property.” So, we’ll let him believe it for now.
According to series creator Shawn Ryan, our aim for Season 2 was to provide a sense of completion while still leaving room for more. We didn’t want to leave things hanging with a full cliffhanger. Instead, the outcomes from Season 2 act as a starting point for the adventures in Season 3.
The third season is currently being filmed, and Basso expresses that, based on its scripts, it’s his preferred season. Among the questions it explores, he mentions, are: “How can one uphold unbiased moral values in a world where everything is relative? It’s challenging to act righteously when what’s right is subjective.
Over the course of this season, I’ve found myself navigating a maze of contrasting facts. Moreover, I played a role in subtly disseminating some falsehoods, notably in Episode 5 where I deceived Noor (Arienne Mandi) about her brother’s safety to maintain her trust. Ryan praises my performance, saying that while he could have asked Basso for such nuanced acting in Season 1, he knew by Season 2 that Basso was capable of delivering this level of subtlety and excellence.
For Basso, the murky ethical dilemma presented a fresh challenge. As he put it, “The journey was straightforward in Season 1 – preventing the president’s assassination. Making such choices is simple. In Season 2, the objectives remain similar, but the route becomes unclear, and that’s when he begins to stray, encounter obstacles, and rationalize actions.
As a discerning movie critic, I find myself resonating deeply with one of our Iranian actors’ sentiments: “There’s so much chaos and complexity in the world, it’s overwhelming. And with all the distrust towards those who wield power over us, it’s refreshing to see a character like Peter, tirelessly striving for authentic truth.
In summary, it seems that Peter’s pursuit of truth may come at a mental cost. Ryan explains, “He thwarted an attack aimed at the United Nations and a hotel housing numerous delegates, but his actions to prevent this attack included obtaining data from the U.N. and giving it to Monroe. This action, unintentionally influencing the presidential election, will undoubtedly place a significant burden on Peter.
The inaugural season of “The Night Agent” became a worldwide hit on Netflix, and its second season could potentially equal its success. However, according to Ryan, shows with ideas similar to movies tend not to have a prolonged lifespan. So, you might wonder, won’t Season 3 of “Squid Game” be the finale? Given its immense popularity, it doesn’t seem unusual to assume that such an extraordinary concept and execution may not be designed for a long-term run.
Instead of creating a new world and a new set of challenges each season, as Ryan points out, we can think of it as constructing a fresh universe filled with novel difficulties and characters. The potential hindrance could be Basso’s decision to continue with the series, given his expressed reservations about acting in EbMaster profile, but Ryan remains hopeful. “This show has within it the capacity to last for as many seasons as Netflix, Sony, and I envision, and for Gabriel to be a part of it as long as he chooses to be.
