As a huge cinema fan, I wasn’t surprised to see other studios trying to capitalize on the massive success of KPop Demon Hunters. It makes total sense! With K-pop becoming more and more popular worldwide, it’s exciting news that Arden Cho and May Hong, the stars of KPop Demon Hunters, are teaming up again for a thriller called Perfect Girl. Plus, I just heard that the smaller studio RedRover is working on something new called Rainmakers, which sounds intriguing!
The Korean production company is bringing two films to the upcoming American Film Market: The Nut Job 3 and MegaRacer. MegaRacer is a sci-fi racing movie already in post-production, according to Variety. The Nut Job 3 is the third installment in The Nut Job series, following the 2014 and 2017 films, both of which featured well-known actors but received low ratings on Rotten Tomatoes (13% and 15%, respectively).
RedRover is launching a new animated film called Rainmakers, marking the studio’s first venture into stories inspired by K-pop. Directed by Lee Seok-hoon, known for films like The Himalayas and Confidential Assignment 2, the movie centers around an orphan and a princess who team up with a group of underdogs to defeat a powerful, corrupt company. K-pop music will be a key part of the narrative.
Lee is a highly successful director in South Korea. His next film, an action-adventure, will be heavily influenced by K-pop, both in its story and how it looks. It will also include original songs created by a K-pop producer whose identity hasn’t been revealed yet. Amy Shi, a producer and strategy executive at RedRover, stated that…
As a huge cinema fan, I’m so excited about this project! With Korean culture, especially K-pop, becoming so popular around the world, it’s fantastic to see a really vibrant, music-filled animated movie coming to life. It’s being directed by Lee Seok-hoon, and the team at Rainmakers and RedRover clearly know what families and kids love. They’re blending the incredible energy of K-pop with fantastic storytelling to create a whole new world, and I can’t wait for everyone to experience it!
Sony and Netflix are currently discussing a second season of KPop Demon Hunters. Depending on when it’s released, it could compete with the new series Rainmakers. However, most viewers are likely much more excited about continuing the story of Rumi, Mira, and Zoey than they are about Rainmakers, even if the director of that series generates some curiosity – though perhaps not enough to boost interest in the studio itself.
Despite its challenges, Rainmakers might actually be a stronger successor to KPop Demon Hunters than Perfect Girl. While Perfect Girl is envisioned as a family-friendly animated series, Rainmakers appears to be aiming for a more mature story, exploring complex issues like the risks of powerful corporations controlling the K-pop industry.
RedRover hasn’t had much success lately, and has been struggling financially because several of its business partners, including the Weinstein Company, have failed. Their new project, Rainmakers, might not be very original, but perhaps a stronger emphasis on Korean culture will help the studio’s artists create something truly special.
