At the 50th season premiere of Saturday Night Live (SNL), “Black Jeopardy” was the second sketch presented. Kenan Thompson and Leslie Jones reappeared in their roles as host Darnell Hayes and contestant Shanice, respectively. Tracy Morgan played another contestant named Darius, while Eddie Murphy delivered an outstanding impression of Morgan. Interestingly, during SNL’s 40th anniversary special, Murphy declined the role of Bill Cosby on “Celebrity Jeopardy,” but we are fortunate that he participated in this sketch (with Jones, who couldn’t help but laugh at most of Murphy’s lines as Morgan). The sketch is noteworthy for its clever premise: none of the contestants were familiar with Saturday Night Live. On a night when SNL was being honored as America’s foremost comedy institution, it served as a humorous reminder that it doesn’t hold such importance for everyone in America.
