The New LOTR Sequel Can Finally Introduce the Hobbit Peter Jackson Ignored

Fans of The Lord of the Rings have more to look forward to! Warner Bros. and New Line Cinemas are already planning a new project following The Hunt for Gollum, which is set to release next year. This time, they’re teaming up with Stephen Colbert, the late-night talk show host, and his son, Peter Colbert, along with Peter Jackson, to create a spinoff that could address some unanswered questions and plot inconsistencies from the original films.

Following The Hunt for Gollum, the new film will cover six chapters from The Fellowship of the Ring that weren’t in Peter Jackson’s 2001 movie. While the filmmakers are being tight-lipped about the details, viewers can likely predict which characters will appear. It seems the story will focus on a character who played a very minor role in the original Lord of the Rings films.

The Lord of the Rings: Shadows of the Past Will Reintroduce Fatty Bolger

Many who loved Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings films might not know that Frodo Baggins had more companions at the start of his journey in J.R.R. Tolkien’s books. Alongside his fellow Hobbit, Fredegar “Fatty” Bolger, Frodo was originally accompanied by four friends. While the films left Fatty out of the story, the new game, The Lord of the Rings: Shadows of the Past, offers a chance to rediscover this often-forgotten character.

In the beginning of Tolkien’s The Fellowship of the Ring, Frodo leaves Hobbiton, telling his friends he’s simply moving to a new house called Crickhollow. One of Merry’s close friends, Fatty, helps him with the move. Like the other Hobbits, Fatty learns about Frodo’s real quest and is invited to join him on the journey to Rivendell. However, after hearing frightening tales about the Old Forest, Fatty decides to return to Hobbiton instead of continuing the adventure.

Though often remembered as the Hobbit who initially hesitated, Fatty ultimately proves to be a hero. He bravely covers for Frodo’s absence, maintaining a normal appearance for the curious Hobbits of the Shire. This act unexpectedly puts him in danger when the Black Riders arrive, seeking Frodo. Forced to act courageously, Fatty manages to warn the other Hobbits and drive the Nazgûl away.

You know, it’s amazing to me how much depth even supporting characters have in Lord of the Rings. There was actually a whole sequence cut from the films where, after Sauron falls, Saruman tries to take over the Shire! And believe it or not, Fatty Bolger really steps up. He basically leads the resistance against Saruman’s forces, holding things down until Frodo and the others get back. It’s a fantastic bit of redemption for him, considering he initially turned back on the journey. He really proves his courage by defending the Shire from this new threat.

Peter Jackson’s films didn’t have time to fully develop the character of Fatty Bolger, so he only appeared briefly. However, the upcoming series Shadows of the Past intends to include important parts of the story that were left out of the 2001 film – scenes where Fatty Bolger plays a significant role. This gives Tolkien’s often-overlooked Hobbit a chance to truly shine in the live-action adaptations, and audiences may come to appreciate Fredegar Bolger in a whole new way once Shadows of the Past is released.

What to Expect From The Lord of the Rings: Shadows of the Past

Peter Jackson and Stephen Colbert are still being tight-lipped about most of the details for The Lord of the Rings: Shadows of the Past. They have revealed, though, that the series will cover events ranging from the beginning of the story to the ‘Fog on the Barrow-downs’ section. This gives fans a pretty clear idea of the new Lord of the Rings film’s scope and potential characters.

These chapters mainly focus on Frodo Baggins and his fellow hobbits as they begin their adventure. This development leads many to believe that Wood will return to play his character in The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum next year.

There’s a good chance we’ll see the other Hobbits return in Shadows of the Past. Sean Astin, Billy Boyd, and Dominic Monaghan have stayed connected with Lord of the Rings fans since the original movies ended, so it’s definitely possible all four Hobbits could come back together for one final adventure in the new spinoff.

The events depicted in The Lord of the Rings: Shadows of the Past happen at the same time as Tom Bombadil’s story in The Fellowship of the Ring. Bombadil was famously left out of Peter Jackson’s films, only appearing recently in Prime Video’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. Considering the new series has limited source material to work with, it’s likely that…

How the New Lord of the Rings Spinoffs Are Fleshing Out the Franchise

It’s natural for some Lord of the Rings fans to be cautious about all the new spin-off projects, but Shadows of the Past could actually be a great addition to the franchise. While the Lord of the Rings movies are often hailed as one of the best adaptations ever made, they aren’t without flaws. The films had to leave out many beloved scenes and characters to keep the focus on Frodo’s quest to destroy the One Ring and the central conflict of the War of the Ring.

Good spinoffs can bring back elements from Tolkien’s books that Peter Jackson had to leave out of his movies. For instance, The Hunt for Gollum and Shadows of the Past are set during the events of The Fellowship of the Ring and explore chapters and side stories that weren’t included in the films. This lets viewers get a more complete picture of events, like what happened with Gollum and the Hobbits’ initial journey before arriving at the Prancing Pony.

The world of Lord of the Rings has a lot more stories to tell in future spinoffs. While the events of The Two Towers and The Return of the King have been largely explored, the wider history of Middle-earth offers many possibilities for new films. The detailed appendices in The Return of the King are full of fascinating side stories, such as the background of key characters and further tales about the realms of Men.

The world of The Lord of the Rings is expanding with new movies like The Hunt for Gollum and Shadows of the Past, which explore previously untold stories from J.R.R. Tolkien’s books. While fans have mixed feelings about these new films, everyone is curious to see how the filmmakers will reimagine Middle-earth.

The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum hits theaters in 2027.
