Great news for horror fans! Scarlett Johansson is joining the cast of the new Exorcist movie, directed and written by Mike Flanagan and produced by Blumhouse and Atomic Monster, according to Deadline. Flanagan praised Johansson as a talented actress who brings authenticity to every role, adding he’s thrilled to have her on board. This will be Johansson’s third foray into the horror genre, following Under the Skin (2013) and Eight Legged Freaks (2002). While her role hasn’t been revealed, it’s likely she’ll be involved in an exorcism, either helping someone possessed or perhaps even being possessed herself – though the filmmakers might have a surprise in store!
The new Exorcist film, originally planned for release next March, doesn’t have a confirmed release date yet. It’s a reboot, not a continuation of the 2023 film Believer. Director Mike Flanagan, who signed on in May 2024 through Red Room Pictures, announced on Tumblr in June 2025 that production hasn’t started because he’s still finishing Carrie. He assures fans it won’t be a simple remake and that he’s aiming high. He told attendees at New York Comic Con in 2024 that he wants to make the scariest movie of his career, something that genuinely frightens him. While that’s a big challenge, it suggests the wait will be worthwhile.
