The Neighborhood Showrunner Reveals How The Hit Comedy Will End Its Final Season

The show premiered on October 3rd. With this being the last season, creator Bill Martin has shared a preview of what’s in store for the characters fans love.

In an interview with TV Line, Martin shared that the characters of Calvin Butler and Dave Johnson have gone through significant life changes since the show first aired in 2018. He described how they’re playfully ‘tormenting’ Dave’s character, comparing it to hitting a piñata, particularly in Season 8 where Dave loses his job after an AI program replaces him. As a result, Dave takes up pickling and searches for new ways to spend his time, now that he’s unemployed.

Okay, so I’m really excited about the next season. Apparently, Gemma’s going through a big change – her son’s graduating, and it’s making her rethink everything. The writers cleverly wrote in Hank Greenspan as a high schooler, which gives Grover a natural way to move on from Gemma’s school. Martin, one of the showrunners, said it’s like Gemma’s spent years being a mom to a kid *at* her school, and now that’s ending, so she’s starting to ask herself what her purpose is. It’s a really interesting turning point for her character, and I can’t wait to see how it plays out.

Mike Schiff, the showrunner, explained that the writers are using major character developments – like Malcolm establishing a home in Venice and Courtney moving in with Marty – to create a satisfying series finale for *The Neighborhood*. He said they’ve reached a point where they can build to a natural conclusion without needing to create artificial obstacles. They’re aiming for a heartwarming and personal finale, rather than one that feels overly drawn out.

Although the final episode hasn’t been written yet, the creative team isn’t planning a two-part finale. According to Schiff, finales often become problematic when they try to do too much. He pointed to *The Mary Tyler Moore Show* as a perfect example – a simple half-hour episode where characters lost their jobs, sang a song, and evoked strong emotions. That’s the kind of impact they’re aiming for. Martin agreed, saying they simply want viewers to fondly remember the show and enjoy the journey it provided.

The Neighborhood Season 8 Will Feature Several Guest Stars

The series, created by Jim Reynolds, centers around Calvin Butler, played by Cedric the Entertainer, whose life is disrupted when the cheerful Dave Johnson (Max Greenfield) and his family from the Midwest move into his Black neighborhood in Pasadena. The show features humorous situations as the Johnson family adjusts, but it also develops into a story about community and connection. The cast also includes Tichina Arnold, Sheaun McKinney, Marcel Spears, Hank Greenspan, Beth Behrs, and Skye Townsend.

Season 8 will include some familiar faces, like John Ross Bowie, known for his previous work, who played Dave’s boss, Gregory, in the season’s first episode. Angelique Cabral returns as Malcolm’s agent, Lisa, after being introduced in Season 7. Although Dave and Tina’s parents might show up, the writers, Martin and Schiff, want the season to primarily focus on the show’s regular characters.

New episodes of The Neighborhood Season 8 air Mondays on CBS.
