As a lifelong horror enthusiast with a penchant for classic Universal monsters, this news about Lee Cronin’s New Line take on The Mummy has me absolutely thrilled! It feels like we’re witnessing history repeating itself, but in a good way this time.
Today, it was revealed that the secretive movie project by Lee Cronin at New Line Studios is a modern spin on the classic tale of “The Mummy”, a genre that’s typically associated with Universal Pictures.
Universal Pictures dominated the horror genre from the 1930s through the early 1950s, largely due to their collection of monsters based on famous novels such as Dracula, Frankenstein, and The Invisible Man. Since these stories were in the public domain, other studios could also adapt them, like Netflix with their upcoming version of Frankenstein.
1932’s “The Mummy” featured an original story specially crafted for the film, and for quite some time, Universal Studios held the reigns on Mummy-related movies (with Hammer’s 1959 production, “The Mummy” starring Christopher Lee being the primary exception). Now that New Line Cinema has acquired a fresh take on “The Mummy,” it’s an amusing turn of events that benefits the studio and ensures the iconic monster is in capable hands.
The Mummy is a big win for New Line and horror fans
As a hardcore gamer, I’ve got to say I’m stoked about the news that Lee Cronin is breathing new life into The Mummy! With backing from Jason Blum’s Blumhouse and James Wan’s Atomic Monster, it seems like Universal has finally decided to give this property another shot. Frankly, I wasn’t holding my breath for a reboot anytime soon after their 2017 action-adventure take on The Mummy flopped. That movie was supposed to kick off a “Dark Universe,” but its poor reception both critically and commercially put an end to that idea altogether.

Universal found success once more with Leigh Whannell’s modern take on The Invisible Man in 2020, shifting from expansive universe-building (similar to the Dark Universe) and instead focusing on standalone, horror-driven adaptations, such as Whannell’s upcoming Wolf Man remake in 2025, also produced by Blumhouse.
The storyline for the film remains undisclosed, but as Cronin shared with The Hollywood Reporter, “This will be a completely unique take on the Mummy series unlike any you’ve seen before. I’m delving deep into the earth to unleash something incredibly ancient and terrifying.
As a gaming enthusiast, I’m thrilled about Lee Cronin being tapped to breathe new life into terrifying mummies! His unflinching Evil Dead Rise was a delightful surprise when it moved from its original Max release and hit the big screen instead. Horror buffs like me welcomed it warmly, and it raked in an impressive $146M on a modest $15M budget.
Making a powerful entrance with the Cronin-directed Mummy film is a smart strategy for New Line, a studio under Warner Bros., which has a history of introducing successful horror franchise characters such as Freddy Krueger from A Nightmare on Elm Street and the supernatural adversaries in the Conjuring series.
