‘The Mummy 4’ Sets Official Release Date

Great news for fans of The Mummy! Universal Pictures has announced a release date for the fourth movie, and both Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz are set to reprise their roles.

In November 2025, Universal Pictures announced they are making a new Mummy movie that will continue the story from the original films. Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz are confirmed to return as their iconic characters, Rick and Evelyn O’Connell. The film will be directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, with a screenplay written by David Coggeshall, according to Variety.

Directors Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett are well-known for their work in the horror genre. They previously directed Ready or Not and its upcoming sequel, Ready or Not 2: Here I Come. They also revitalized the Scream franchise with 2022’s Scream and 2023’s Scream VI, and in 2024, they offered a fresh take on a classic Universal Monster with their film Abigail.

Producer James Gillett recently discussed joining the Mummy franchise, telling Empire Magazine that after working on Scream, he’s looking for projects that truly stand out. He said the script by David Coggeshall felt special, describing it as visually stunning, exciting, frightening, and enjoyable. This suggests the new Mummy film will recapture the spirit of earlier installments, which is great news for fans.

‘The Mummy’ Returns (Again)

Universal Pictures

Variety reports that a fourth Mummy movie is scheduled for release on May 19, 2028. This would be almost a century after the original Mummy film first appeared in theaters.

The Mummy is a famous horror series from Universal Pictures that began in 1932 with a film starring Boris Karloff. While the original was a classic, many people today remember the 1999 movie starring Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz, directed by Stephen Sommers. That film was very successful and led to two sequels: The Mummy Returns (2001) and The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (2008). Rachel Weisz and Stephen Sommers didn’t participate in the later film. The series also spawned a spin-off called The Scorpion King in 2002, featuring Dwayne Johnson, which later had two direct-to-video sequels without him.

I remember when Universal tried to bring The Mummy back in 2017 with Tom Cruise, hoping to launch this whole interconnected ‘Dark Universe’ of monster movies. Sadly, it just didn’t work out – critics didn’t love it, and it didn’t make much money at the box office. That pretty much ended the Dark Universe idea before it even had a chance. But, there’s a new Mummy movie coming from Warner Bros., directed by Lee Cronin, and I’m cautiously optimistic! It’s scheduled to hit theaters on April 17, 2026, and it seems totally separate from Universal’s plans, which is fine by me – a fresh start could be great!

A fourth Mummy movie is currently being developed and is considered a priority for Universal Pictures. Both Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz, who starred together in The Mummy Returns, have seen their careers soar and each has since won an Oscar – Weisz for The Constant Gardener in 2006 and Fraser for The Whale in 2024. Interest in The Mummy films has increased over the last twenty years. Despite some audience fatigue with reboots, The Mummy 4 has a strong chance of being successful and revitalizing the franchise after the failed attempt to launch a ‘Dark Universe’ with the previous Mummy film.
