Few directors have made such a strong impact with their first film, but Neill Blomkamp is one of them. His 2009 sci-fi action movie was a massive hit, topping the box office in its opening weekend and quickly becoming known as one of the best sci-fi films of the 21st century. Now, fans will be able to enjoy it again when it streams on Netflix next month.
We’re discussing District 9, director Neill Blomkamp’s first movie, which was released on August 14, 2009. Despite featuring a relatively unknown cast, District 9 became a critical and commercial hit, earning $210 million worldwide – an impressive result for an independent film made with a $30 million budget. Remarkably, it also received four Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture. This was a huge accomplishment for a first-time director, and while it didn’t win any awards, it cemented the film’s status as a sci-fi classic.
Thirty years ago, aliens came to Earth, not as invaders or helpers, but as refugees fleeing their own doomed world. They’ve been confined to an area in South Africa called District 9, and a corporation called Multi-National United controls them. This company doesn’t care about the aliens’ well-being, but is desperate to understand and use their advanced technology. When a company employee named Copley becomes infected with a strange virus that changes his DNA, he’s forced to go into hiding amongst the aliens in District 9.
