The Most Disliked Characters in the Harry Potter Franchise

As a longtime fan, I have to say the Harry Potter series really nailed creating characters we all connected with – some truly iconic ones! But let’s be real, looking back, there are definitely a few faces in those movies that rubbed fans (and me!) the wrong way. They weren’t all magical, that’s for sure!

Although Harry, Ron, and Hermione are the central characters, the story is truly powered by a wide cast. Even characters fans love to hate – like Dolores Umbridge and Wormtail – play crucial roles. With the Harry Potter series being hailed as a massive streaming event, it’s a good moment to revisit some of the most disliked characters. Fans generally dislike these characters because of their irritating or villainous qualities, or because the story doesn’t offer them any path to change.

Lavender Brown

Warner Bros. Pictures

Lavender Brown, played by Jessie Cave, wasn’t a major character in the Harry Potter series until The Half-Blood Prince. Initially just a classmate in Gryffindor, she became unpopular with fans when she began dating Ron Weasley. Lavender’s intense jealousy of Hermione Granger led her to constantly interrupt and interfere with even the most important discussions between Harry, Ron, and Hermione. This frustrating behavior made her one of the most disliked characters among Harry Potter fans.

Despite being unpopular, Lavender isn’t truly a villain. She actually showed courage and made amends by fighting in the Battle of Hogwarts, where she tragically died fighting Fenrir Greyback.

Dudley Dursley

Warner Bros. Pictures

As a film fan, I have to say Dudley Dursley, played brilliantly by Harry Melling, immediately came across as one of the most irritating characters in the whole series. He clearly picked up his awful, entitled attitude from his parents, and he relentlessly tormented poor Harry Potter. Honestly, he’s right up there with the worst on-screen bullies I’ve ever seen.

Dudley is spoiled and frequently bullies Harry, and we first see this when he throws a tantrum because he didn’t receive as many birthday presents as he expected. His unpleasant eating habits are also frustrating to watch. Later, in Order of the Phoenix, Harry saves Dudley from Dementors, which leads to a significant shift in Dudley’s behavior. However, this doesn’t erase the years of mistreatment Harry endured.

Cho Chang

Warner Bros. Pictures

Many fans dislike Cho Chang (Katie Leung) because she breaks Harry’s heart. Harry doesn’t immediately tell her how he feels, and by the time she knows, she’s already dating Cedric Diggory.

Fans become particularly frustrated with Cho Chang in Order of the Phoenix because she sends Harry confusing signals about how she really feels. Her unpredictable behavior bothers both Ron and Harry, and many readers find it irritating as well. While Hermione points out that Cho is still mourning Cedric, her actions suggest she isn’t a good match for Harry. Despite this, some people believe Cho was unfairly criticized.

Rita Skeeter

Warner Bros.

Long before “fake news” became a common topic of discussion, Rita Skeeter, a journalist for The Daily Prophet (played by Miranda Richardson), was already spreading false and exaggerated stories in the Wizarding World. From her very first appearance in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, it was clear she didn’t prioritize accuracy. In fact, she actively enjoyed distorting the truth, even if it meant harming others with her fabricated reports.

Rita Skeeter badly hurt Harry’s reputation and assisted the Ministry in spreading false stories about him. Hermione managed to control Rita by blackmailing her – threatening to expose her secret ability to transform into an animal if she didn’t interview Harry. Although this worked temporarily, Rita soon resumed writing misleading articles, including a prejudiced biography of Albus Dumbledore.

Percy Weasley

Warner Bros.

The Weasley family is a beloved part of the Wizarding World, and Ron is known for his memorable lines. Most of the Weasleys are kind and caring, but Percy (Chris Rankin) stands out as different – and not in a good way. He comes across as arrogant and overly focused on his career, making him a difficult character to like.

Percy’s qualities got him a job at the Ministry of Magic, but he distanced himself from his family by refusing to believe Voldemort had returned. He supported Cornelius Fudge in The Order of the Phoenix, which caused further conflict, as Fudge was spreading false information about Harry. Even after discovering he was wrong about Voldemort’s return, Percy never apologized.

Mundungus Fletcher

Warner Bros.

Mundungus Fletcher, played by Andy Linden, was one of the first members of the Order of the Phoenix. Viewers might expect him to be brave, but actually, he was widely known in the wizarding world as a coward and a small-time thief.

Mundungus is a widely disliked character due to his involvement in shady dealings and his tendency to avoid danger. His desertion during the Battle of the Seven Potters had tragic consequences, ultimately leading to Alastor Moody’s death. Despite his flaws, he remained loyal to Dumbledore throughout it all.

Fenrir Greyback

Warner Bros.

Fenrir Greyback (Dave Legeno) is a particularly cruel character because he deliberately targets children. As the leader of a werewolf pack, his aim was to turn as many people as possible into werewolves, hoping to create a massive army and overthrow the wizarding world. That’s why he had no qualms about infecting children with lycanthropy.

Fenrir Greyback openly admits to enjoying turning children into werewolves, and even to killing some. He also killed Lavender Brown during the Battle of Hogwarts. This cruelty made him universally despised; even Albus Dumbledore avoided him, refusing to interact with him for more than a few seconds.

Petunia Dursley

Warner Bros.

Petunia Dursley, played by Fiona Shaw, is a resentful woman who happens to be Harry Potter’s aunt. She always disliked her sister, Lily, for being a witch, and directs that negativity towards Harry, mistreating him whenever she can.

Petunia is a mean and unpleasant character, and even actively cruel, demonstrated by her coldness towards her nephew, Harry, after his mother died. Her one attempt to show remorse is telling Harry that she also suffered a loss with her sister Lily’s death. However, she doesn’t come close to being as caring and loving a mother as Molly Weasley, who is a standout in the Harry Potter series.

Vernon Dursley

Warner Bros.

Petunia generally goes along with her husband, Vernon (Richard Griffiths), in bullying Harry whenever she can. Vernon is determined to make Harry’s life unpleasant, but he doesn’t have a significant impact on the overall story. He resents having to care for Petunia’s nephew, whom he considers strange, and decided to make Harry live in a small room under the stairs.

The Dursleys—Petunia and Vernon—are horrified to discover Harry is a wizard, not an ordinary person like themselves. Despite their efforts, they can’t prevent him from embracing magic and following his path. While fans enjoy seeing Harry gain independence and master his abilities, it’s a bit frustrating that the Dursleys’ story doesn’t have a clear resolution.

Moaning Myrtle

Moaning Myrtle (Shirley Henderson) was a ghost, and just as irritating as anyone alive. Being a ghost actually made her even more annoying, as she had a habit of appearing in inappropriate places – like when Harry was taking a bath.

This behavior likely explains why Tom Riddle first targeted Myrtle, using her to test the Basilisk in a Hogwarts bathroom. Her death allowed him to create his first Horcrux – Tom Riddle’s Diary – and she remained at Hogwarts as a ghost, haunting the bathroom. Unfortunately, she constantly complained and moaned, particularly when others were unkind, making her unpopular with students and readers alike.
