As a huge Monsterverse fan, I was really surprised and excited to see Tiamat show up in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire! You might remember in Godzilla: King of the Monsters, they laid out a whole list of 11 Titans that were basically just names and locations – creatures they’d established existed but hadn’t shown us yet. I honestly thought some of them were written off, but it turns out they weren’t done with Tiamat after all. It’s cool to see them bringing back characters they initially presented as background elements.
Tiamat, a massive sea serpent, first appeared in the 2020 graphic novel Godzilla: Dominion. She was defeated by Godzilla in a fight within her underwater lair in the Arctic Ocean. After killing Tiamat, Godzilla took over her lair and absorbed her energy, which led to his powerful new ‘Godzilla Evolved’ form.
So, it looked like Tiamat’s role in the Godzilla vs. Kong movies was just a one-off, but honestly, with how things are unfolding, I wouldn’t be shocked if we see her pop up in a future spinoff – especially in Apple TV+’s Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. It feels like they’re setting things up for her to come back, you know?
Why Tiamat Could Appear In Monarch’s Cold War Era Spinoff
Apple TV has announced a spinoff series for Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, centering on Wyatt Russell’s character, Lee Shaw. The new show will follow Shaw as he investigates a terrifying new Titan the Soviets might be preparing to use against the US in 1984.
Tiamat plays a key role in the new story and its world, especially since the official comic book, Monsterverse Declassified, established a direct link between the Titan and Russia during the Cold War. The comic showed that Tiamat actually destroyed a Russian submarine back then.
Considering this detail, it’s likely this incident – or the events before it – will be explored in the spinoff or play a significant role in the storyline.
Where Tiamat Could Fit Into The Monarch Spinoff’s Story
Since Tiamat is already an established Titan, she won’t be the main, newly introduced threat described in the official synopsis for the show. However, given that Monarch: Legacy of Monsters features several Titans, it’s likely the series will include more than just one powerful creature.
The Monsterverse could expand on the rivalry between Tiamat and Godzilla, who have already fought in both Dominion and The New Empire. A potential backstory, perhaps even a previous battle in 1984, could be explored in one of the upcoming spinoff series.
The show might also reveal how Tiamat fits into the larger Monsterverse story. We know she ended up beneath Stone Mountain, Georgia, sometime between the Cold War and the events of Godzilla: King of the Monsters. A Titan fight seen by Wyatt Russell’s character could explain how she got there.
