Matt Mercer, known for voicing villains in The Legend of Vox Machina, is now taking on a significant new role in The Mighty Nein. The cast features familiar faces from the original Critical Role campaign, and Mercer himself plays the character Essek Thelyss, while also serving as the Dungeon Master for the series.
In a conversation with Grant Hermanns from ScreenRant, actor Mercer discussed his experience playing a central character in The Mighty Nein after appearing in The Legend of Vox Machina. He expressed his enthusiasm for taking on a leading role and exploring the intricate personality of Essek.
As a huge fan of Critical Role, it’s so cool to hear about Matt Mercer getting a bigger role on-screen this campaign! He was involved with Vox Machina doing voice work, but now he’s playing a main character, and I’m really curious what that experience is like for him. He talked about how it feels to spend more time in the recording booth for this new show compared to the Vox Machina series – it sounds like he’s really getting to dive in!
It feels great to be playing alongside everyone this time. I usually enjoy playing smaller or villainous roles, appearing for a few episodes at a time, and those are fun too. But this is the first time I’ve gotten to join the cast as a main character with a longer storyline – hopefully for many episodes if the show continues. It’s really satisfying as an actor. It’s been a lot of fun exploring my character, the Dunamancer, and understanding why he is the way he is.

Travis Mercer has been involved with The Legend of Vox Machina since the beginning, initially as the voice of Trinket, Vax’s grizzly bear. He later voiced several villains, including Sylas Briarwood the vampire, the demon Orthax, and the black dragon Umbrasyl – roles he often played as the Dungeon Master during the Critical Role campaign.
Essek from The Mighty Nein is a well-developed character who has significant interactions with the main heroes. Originally, in the Critical Role campaign, Essek was an NPC voiced by Matthew Mercer, like all other non-player characters. But he’s crucial to several storylines, and the adaptation will showcase that importance.
Essek has a more prominent role right away in the series. As a member of the Kryn Dynasty, he’s caught in the middle of negotiations between his people and the Dwendalian Empire during a period of high conflict. He’s also keeping a dangerous secret: his mother suffers from typhros, a disease that is punishable by death within the Dynasty.
This fantasy streaming series lets actor Travis Mercer really showcase his voice acting skills through the significant role of Essek. The show is delving deeper into Essek’s history than the original campaign did, expanding his backstory and setting the stage for his importance later on.
Mercer is really looking forward to having a bigger part in the show, particularly because The Mighty Nein will allow him to play a significant and supportive role alongside the team. As the story develops, he’ll likely remain a key player, especially considering his connection to the Dynasty.
