The MCU’s Spider-Man isn’t the Only Hero Who Desperately Needs a Makeover

Even though the “Brand New Day” storyline was controversial for Spider-Man comics almost twenty years ago, the idea behind it – significantly changing a character’s world – has a lot of promise. That’s why the upcoming Spider-Man movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is exciting, and hopefully will allow for fresh and innovative storytelling.

Tom Holland’s MCU Spider-Man Has Never Looked Better

If you’re not familiar with the Spider-Man comics “One More Day” and “Brand New Day,” the movie Spider-Man: No Way Home draws inspiration from “One More Day,” and a future film, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, will be based on the comic of the same name. “One More Day” is a famously debated storyline where Peter Parker makes a deal with the devil, Mephisto, to save Aunt May’s life. The cost? Everyone forgets Peter is Spider-Man, and he loses all memories of his marriage to Mary Jane Watson-Parker.

In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Peter Parker carelessly causes Doctor Strange to mess up a spell intended to erase everyone’s memory of his identity as Spider-Man. By the end of No Way Home, Peter asks Doctor Strange to cast a new spell, this time making everyone forget who he is as a person.

It’s heartbreaking, but the spell worked – nobody remembers Peter Parker anymore, not even his closest friends, MJ and Ned. While it frees him from the struggle of balancing a normal life with being Spider-Man, I’m really worried about what that will do to him. All the talk and leaks surrounding the ‘Brand New Day’ storyline – and even the issues ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is dealing with – suggest that completely dedicating himself to being Spider-Man could drastically change him, both physically and in terms of who he connects with. I’m genuinely concerned about the cost of this new focus.

Whether or not the creative team behind the Marvel’s Spider-Man games is paying attention, Spider-Man: Brand New Day offers a really promising new path for the character. It would be great to see the games delve into fresh aspects of both Miles Morales and Peter Parker, building on the unique versions we’ve already seen.

Insomniac’s Spider-Men Need Their Own ‘Brand New Day’

As a huge fan, I’m so excited about where things are going with Peter and Miles in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2! It’s a really cool setup – Peter’s taking some time to rebuild, living back in Queens with MJ and trying to get a new version of Harry Osborn’s foundation off the ground from their garage. And Miles? He’s growing up! He’s probably heading to Empire State University to focus on music tech, and it looks like he might even be mentoring Cindy Moon, who’s connected to his mom’s new partner, and training her to be a hero too. It’s a fantastic direction for the story!

Even though it’s expected to be the last game in Insomniac’s Spider-Man series, Marvel’s Spider-Man 3 should offer plenty of surprises and hopefully fix some controversial character choices. One odd decision that hasn’t been explained is why Peter Parker has the Anti-Venom symbiote when his friend, Harry Osborn, could use it to cure his illness without any harmful side effects. It just doesn’t make much sense.
