One of the most anticipated parts of the next Avengers movies, Doomsday and Secret Wars, is the potential for characters from the X-Men franchise to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios, has stated that mutants will be a key part of future MCU storylines. While some actors from the existing X-Men films might return, Disney will likely also introduce a new, younger cast to play the team.
Rumors suggest Sadie Sink’s character in Spider-Man: Brand New Day might be Jean Grey, hinting that the introduction of the X-Men into the Marvel Cinematic Universe could already be underway. With so many mutant heroes in Marvel Comics, the potential team roster is vast. However, the most impactful choice might be a surprising one: recreating the original X-Men lineup from their first appearance in Uncanny X-Men #1, featuring Cyclops, Jean Grey, Beast, Iceman, and Angel.
X-Men Adaptations Always Overlook the Original Team
Building a team around these five heroes would be surprisingly effective. While it echoes the original X-Men lineup, it would actually make the MCU’s version stand out, as no other major film or show has used this exact combination. The 2000 X-Men movie, for example, featured Cyclops, Jean Grey, Storm, Wolverine, and Rogue. Iceman was a new recruit with limited screen time, and characters like Beast and Angel didn’t appear until later in the series.
The movie X-Men: First Class could have established a more accurate original team, but it chose to feature Professor X, Magneto, Beast, Mystique, Banshee, and Havok. Other X-Men adaptations like X-Men: The Animated Series and X-Men: Evolution have also created their own versions of the core team. When incorporating the X-Men into the MCU, a more faithful approach would be to honor the original five members who began the team.
The MCU Can Redeem Less Popular Members of the X-Men
Bringing these characters into the Marvel Cinematic Universe would also give some underappreciated heroes a chance to truly shine. Previous films didn’t do justice to characters like Jean Grey, whose key storylines were poorly handled, or Beast, who spent most of his time as a human instead of his iconic blue form. Angel and Iceman were also sidelined. Because these characters are fan favorites and vital to the X-Men’s legacy, they deserve a better portrayal on screen.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe could also gain by waiting to introduce characters that were already well-portrayed in films from 20th Century Fox, like Wolverine. Whoever takes on the role will face a challenge, but fans are more likely to embrace a new actor if enough time has passed since the previous portrayal of the character.
The MCU Should Save Some of the Best X-Men For Later Films
To keep the mutant storyline clear and avoid past mistakes, the MCU should begin with the original X-Men team. Previous attempts were often confusing, with frequent changes and inconsistencies in the timeline and character usage. A chronological approach, starting with the first five members, would be much more effective. This allows the MCU to build the team gradually over time, mirroring the way the X-Men have expanded in the comics for over six decades.
Disney might be reluctant to do this because it would mean leaving out some well-loved characters who could attract more viewers. Still, focusing on long-term stability for the Marvel Cinematic Universe would ultimately be a better strategy.
The movies could hint at popular characters and storylines to get fans excited, like referencing the Weapon X program or stories about Wolverine. Unlike the original X-Men films, which didn’t have a clear long-term plan, Marvel’s new X-Men project can be carefully built from the start. The best way to do that is by using the original stories and foundation created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby in Uncanny X-Men #1.
