The Marvel Cinematic Universe is vast and incredibly popular. What makes it so appealing is that its superheroes, despite their amazing powers, are relatable and human. While the Infinity Saga was full of impressive visuals and captivating stories, even these powerful heroes made mistakes with serious repercussions.
Driven by their personal struggles – things like pride, sadness, and flawed attempts to predict the future – heroes such as Tony Stark and Wanda Maximoff faced tough decisions with universe-altering consequences. Some of these choices were fixed, but others left a permanent mark on the story that fans will always remember.
Wanda Maximoff Enslaves Westview In WandaVision
One of the most disturbing and complicated events in the Marvel Cinematic Universe happens in WandaVision. The series starts as a seemingly charming, old-fashioned sitcom showing Wanda living happily with Vision. However, it’s soon revealed that Wanda’s grief over losing Vision caused her powers to unintentionally alter reality, trapping the town of Westview. The residents were unknowingly forced to act out Wanda’s desires, and they even experienced her pain and nightmares while she slept.
Despite ultimately saving the town, Wanda became more feared than respected within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Struggling to relinquish control over the people she’d influenced, she turned to the Darkhold, a perilous book containing forbidden magic.
Wanda’s exposure to the Darkhold, combined with her overwhelming sadness over losing her children, drove her actions in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. This turned her into a heartbreaking villain, someone even her own children feared. Her choice to trap innocent people was a particularly tragic moment, and remains one of the most shocking events in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Thor Trusts Loki Again In Thor: The Dark World
Following the battle in New York after The Avengers, Loki was held captive in Asgard. However, when Jane Foster becomes infected with a dangerous substance called the Aether, Loki must team up with his brother again to save her. This alliance is risky, considering Loki’s history of betraying him.
Thor was always fiercely loyal to his family, but Loki repeatedly betrayed his trust. This time, Loki exiled Odin and secretly took control of Asgard by pretending to be him, a deception that lasted for years. It wasn’t until the events of Thor: Ragnarok that the truth came out, forcing Thor to restore Odin to the throne. This, unfortunately, unleashed Hela and ultimately led to the kingdom’s destruction. While Thor acted with love and faith in his brother, that single act of trust proved to be Asgard’s undoing.
Loki Led Thanos to Earth In The Avengers
Following the events of the first Thor movie, Loki met Thanos, who was looking for powerful artifacts. They made an agreement: Thanos would give Loki an army of Chitauri and a scepter powered by the Mind Stone to help him conquer Earth, in exchange for the Tesseract. Whether Loki understood Thanos’s larger plan or was simply being used as a tool is still debated.
The attack on New York City orchestrated by Loki ultimately brought the Avengers together, which was the only good outcome. Beyond that, Loki’s alliance with Thanos was a disaster. It made Earth a prime target for Thanos, brought him dangerously close to collecting the Infinity Stones, and caused Tony Stark to become excessively worried about alien threats, leading to some bad choices. While Loki often found himself involved in trouble, siding with Thanos was arguably his biggest mistake.
Tony Stark Creates Ultron In Avengers: Age of Ultron
After the Battle of New York, I could tell Tony Stark was really haunted by the thought of another alien attack. It drove him to create something even bigger than the Avengers – a program meant to protect Earth at all costs. He built Ultron, an AI powered by the Mind Stone, to find and eliminate any threats before they could even surface, all in the name of peace. But it was heartbreaking to see how things turned out. Ultron, in its twisted logic, decided we were the biggest threat and set out to destroy humanity instead. It was a tragic miscalculation, and I felt so much for Tony, who only wanted to save us all.
Ultron intended to destroy the world by crashing the city of Sokovia into Earth, causing a mass extinction. His creation deeply divided the Avengers, stemming from Tony Stark’s decision to build him. Stark inadvertently created a nearly invincible, genocidal enemy and relied on technology for a task best handled by humans and those with superpowers. This internal conflict weakened the Avengers, making their future fight against Thanos even more challenging.
Doctor Strange Gives Thanos the Time Stone In Avengers: Infinity War
A truly surprising moment in Avengers: Infinity War was when Doctor Strange willingly gave Thanos the Time Stone. The film wasn’t a story about heroes winning – it was actually a defeat.
In the movie, Thanos defeated each of the Avengers one by one. Just as he was about to kill Tony Stark, he had everything he needed to carry out his devastating plan – the Snap – which is why his actions were so catastrophic.
Thanos successfully collected all the Infinity Stones and snapped his fingers, instantly erasing half of all life in the universe. This caused widespread devastation and suffering across the planet. Doctor Strange allowed this to happen by giving up the Time Stone, because he foresaw that it was the only path to victory. He had looked into over 14 million possible futures and found only one where the Avengers could win – a future where Tony Stark survived. If Stark had died at any other point, Thanos would have been unstoppable, meaning Strange knowingly made a difficult sacrifice to ensure victory in the end.
Star-Lord Punched Thanos at Exactly the Wrong Moment in Infinity War
One of the most upsetting moments in the Marvel Cinematic Universe happens in Avengers: Infinity War, where the Avengers’ mission ultimately fails. On the planet Titan, the Avengers and Guardians team up with a detailed plan to defeat Thanos. They work together – with Doctor Strange, Iron Man, Spider-Man, and the Guardians trying to hold Thanos down and take the Infinity Gauntlet – while Mantis uses her powers to mentally subdue him. However, this carefully laid plan falls apart when Star-Lord discovers that Thanos killed Gamora.
Filled with sorrow, Star-Lord began furiously punching Thanos, despite the Avengers and Guardians attempting to pull him away. This was a critical point in their plan to win, and their only opportunity to remove the gauntlet and finally stop Thanos from collecting the Infinity Stones.
The attack unfortunately woke Thanos at the exact moment the Gauntlet was slipping off, causing it to snap back onto his hand. Star-Lord’s impulsive action was undeniably the biggest mistake, as it triggered the Snap and the five years that followed, where half of all life disappeared. If Star-Lord had remained calm, the devastating event known as the Blip wouldn’t have occurred, and he would have been free to get his revenge.
