The Match Factory is handling global distribution rights for “Twelve Moons,” the first full-length film by Mexican director Victoria Franco, which will make its debut in the International Narrative Competition section of the 2023 Tribeca Film Festival.
The movie features renowned Mexican actress Ana de la Reguera (“Nacho Libre,” “Goliath,” “Twin Peaks”), who has a successful career spanning both Hollywood and Latin American film industries, sharing the screen with Ariel Award winner Enrique Arreola (“Duck Season”).
As a cinema enthusiast, I find myself immersed in “Twelve Moons,” a heart-wrenching journey set amidst the vibrant backdrop of Mexico City. This film chronicles my own emotional introspection after experiencing deep personal grief.
The movie centers around Sofia, a 40-year-old architect, who has endured a heart-wrenching tragedy. She’s on a journey to cope with her intricate feelings while maintaining her authentic self. As she wrestles with her fertility issues and self-perception as a woman, both her personal and professional life start to crumble, pushing her to search within herself for the beacon of hope that will guide her towards healing.
Franco expressed a desire to depict a character who doesn’t find a place that feels right, and struggles with societal norms. It’s an exploration of the insensitivity shown towards individuals who don’t fit the mold of conventional success in our society.
Franco’s debut feature film, titled “Twelve Moons,” serves as her multi-faceted contribution as a director, screenwriter, and producer. Prior to this, Franco has directed short films such as “Reconciliados” (2014) and “Borde” (2017), and served as the creative producer for various critically acclaimed movies by her brother Michel Franco, including “New Order,” which won the Venice Grand Jury Prize in 2020, and “Sundown,” premiered at Venice in 2021.
The movie is created by the influential Mexican production house, Teorema, known for movies such as “Dreams” (Berlinale Competition, 2025), starring Jessica Chastain, and “Memory” (Venice Competition, 2023). This film is overseen by producers Michel Franco, Eréndira Núñez Larios, Yardena Maimon, and Victoria Franco. Additionally, Ana de la Reguera plays a role as an executive producer.
At the Cannes Film Festival, The Match Factory’s lineup features Oliver Laxe’s film “Sirat” and Kelly Reichardt’s production titled “The Mastermind.” Both of these films are competing for awards. Additionally, Akinola Davies Jr.’s movie “My Father’s Shadow” is part of the Un Certain Regard section.
