Nearly ten years after Denzel Washington and a talented cast starred in Antoine Fuqua’s updated version of a beloved Western from 1960, the film – originally released by Sony Pictures in September 2016 – is now gaining popularity as a streaming favorite.
As of November 15th, The Magnificent Seven is currently the 7th most popular movie on MGM+ globally, according to FlixPatrol. In the United States, it’s ranked at number 9. When originally released, the film earned over $162 million worldwide, exceeding its $90 million production budget.
This movie is based on the classic 1960 film Seven Samurai by Akira Kurosawa. Currently, The Magnificent Seven is performing better in the U.S. than both The Naked Gun (2025), which is number 10, and Tombstone (1993), which is at number 9.
Denzel Washington and Chris Pratt led the cast of The Magnificent Seven, joined by Ethan Hawke, Vincent D’Onofrio, Peter Sarsgaard, Matt Bomer, and the late Jonathan Joss. Washington plays Sam Chisolm, a bounty hunter who teams up with seven other outlaws to defend a small town from a ruthless businessman named Bartholomew Bogue (Sarsgaard). Critics gave the film a 64% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 315 reviews, while audiences rated it 71% with over 25,000 votes.
Despite receiving negative reviews and not doing well in theaters, plans for a television series were announced in April 2023. Nic Pizzolatto was set to work on the project for Amazon Studios. The series will follow an ex-outlaw on a long and dangerous journey, gathering a group of companions while being pursued by someone from his past.
The show was planned as a classic Western epic, similar to those from the golden age of the genre. The story would have followed an outlaw and his crew as they gathered a diverse group of fighters to protect a settlement of immigrant homesteaders from powerful cattle barons in central Texas – a sweeping tale of adventure, action, and romance. Unfortunately, there haven’t been any new developments regarding the TV series since 2023, leaving fans waiting for updates.
Pratt will Star in a New Sci-Fi Film
Chris Pratt’s next project is the sci-fi thriller Mercy, scheduled for release on January 23, 2026. He recently discussed the difficulties of filming it, explaining that much of the footage used in the movie is the same material being presented as evidence against him in a current trial. Pratt described needing to film numerous shots – including those from doorbell cameras, security systems, and video calls – knowing they would likely be used in court.
I just saw Mercy, and it’s a really gripping story! It centers around a detective—played by Pratt—who finds himself accused of his wife’s murder. The twist is, he has to prove his innocence in court, but the judge isn’t a person—it’s an AI, brilliantly portrayed by Rebecca Ferguson! He’s got only 90 minutes to convince it he’s not guilty, and it’s intense watching him try.
As I sat there during filming, we used very long takes, which was a real challenge. I enjoy shooting movies, but this was the first time I’d made a film that focused entirely on 90 minutes of a character’s life. It was a fantastic experience and really built suspense. Once the story gets going, it doesn’t stop – it’s like the main character has 90 minutes to save his life during this intense trial.
The Magnificent Seven is streaming on MGM+.
