Amazon MGM Studios would be being dishonest if it didn’t admit to significantly investing in content aimed at young adults. After the popularity of We Were Liars and The Summer I Turned Pretty, Amazon has started working on a television series based on Ruth Ware’s 2017 novel The Lying Game.
I just read that Suzanne Heathcote, who’s known for her work on The Thursday Murder Club and Killing Eve, is going to be writing the TV adaptation of The Lying Game. It’s a really intriguing psychological thriller for young adults. The story follows four friends who were kicked out of boarding school years ago because of a lie that spiraled out of control. Now, they’re back together and have to deal with a dangerous secret they thought they’d left in the past forever. I’m excited to hear that Ted Gold and Susan Rovner are executive producing, along with Heathcote and the author of the book, Ware.
Prime Video Is Home to Multiple Successful TV Adaptations
While Netflix has had hits like House of Cards and Stranger Things, and Disney+ benefits from the Star Wars and Marvel franchises, Prime Video has become known over the past ten years for successfully turning popular books and series into TV shows. The streaming service first gained traction with what’s been called “Dad TV,” bringing long-running crime novels-like Michael Connelly’s Harry Bosch and Lee Child’s Jack Reacher-to the screen. Featuring engaging lead actors and drawing from well-loved source material each season, Bosch and Reacher quickly became some of Prime Video’s most popular shows.
Prime Video remains dedicated to crime dramas – they released Cross, inspired by James Patterson’s Alex Cross series, last year – but they’ve had equal, or even greater, success with young adult stories. The Summer I Turned Pretty was a major success for Prime Video, attracting 25 million viewers worldwide in its first week. Currently, a longer continuation of the series is being developed.
Let’s talk about what’s next for Prime Video. They seem to be really Overcompensating with their second seasons – a smart move considering how few of their young adult shows *aren’t* based on pre-existing books. And speaking of books, they’re already gearing up for adaptations of Elle Kennedy’s Off Campus and other titles, which will definitely add to their growing collection of young adult content. It’s a clear strategy to solidify their place in that market.
Regarding Ware, the The Lying Game series is coming to screens shortly before Netflix releases the film adaptation of her novel. The movie’s description explains: “A journalist (Keira Knightley) is on a fancy yacht for work when she sees someone thrown overboard at night. She’s told it didn’t happen because everyone is present and accounted for. Even though no one believes her, she keeps searching for the truth, which puts her in danger.” The film will be available on Netflix starting October 10.
