A new game based on The Lord of the Rings is supposedly being developed. Insider Gaming recently shared this news. The game is expected to cost around $100 million to make. Sources say the Abu Dhabi Investment Office (ADIO) is providing some financial support, and development has reportedly been underway for about a year.
Competition for Hogwarts Legacy?
This news is currently unconfirmed and considered a rumor, but it reportedly comes from people familiar with the project. We likely won’t know for sure until sometime next week; according to these sources, “the deal is still being finalized because there are many details to work out.”
Embracer Group will be handling the production, as they have held the rights to the franchise since 2022. They are said to be working with multiple development teams, though only the studio Revenge has been specifically named. Currently, neither Embracer Group nor Revenge has verified these claims, stating they prefer not to comment on rumors or speculation.
However, some new and interesting information has come to light, giving us a clearer picture of this intriguing project. Firstly, the game will be played from a third-person viewpoint. Secondly, the developers are hoping to create a strong rival to Hogwarts Legacy, released in 2023-which, incidentally, is now available on Xbox Play Anywhere-and that’s a very challenging aim. Hogwarts Legacy has been incredibly successful, selling over 30 million copies already.
It remains to be seen whether this will significantly change the landscape of Lord of the Rings games. The developers are hoping for this outcome, and Lee Guinchard, a CEO at Embracer Group, expressed this sentiment in a past interview.
