To celebrate the 25th anniversary of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, five of the movie’s main actors have come back together. The reunion includes Elijah Wood (Frodo Baggins), Sean Astin (Samwise Gamgee), Dominic Monaghan (Merry Brandybuck), Billy Boyd (Pippin Took), and Ian McKellen (Gandalf).
The four actors who played Hobbits have gotten together before for events at fan conventions. This reunion included Ian McKellen, who will soon be reprising his role as Gandalf in the upcoming film, The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum. However, Viggo Mortensen, along with other stars from The Lord of the Rings, did not participate.
In an interview with Empire, Ian McKellen shared that after filming The Lord of the Rings, the cast became very close and promised to meet up regularly, no matter where they were located, to stay connected. However, McKellen admits he hasn’t attended any of these reunions in the past 25 years, and jokingly suggests others should be asked if they’ve been happening without him.
Empire magazine posted photos from the cast reunion, including a fun picture of Elijah Wood kneeling beside Ian McKellen. This playfully showed the height difference between Wood’s Hobbit character and McKellen’s tall wizard.
The Lord of the Rings Celebrates Its 25th Anniversary
It’s been 25 years since The Lord of the Rings first hit theaters, and the celebration is going beyond just the cast getting back together. To mark the 25th anniversary of The Fellowship of the Ring, all three Lord of the Rings movies – in their extended editions – will be shown in select theaters. They’ll be presented in DBOX immersive technology from January 16th to 19th, and then in standard format from January 23rd to 25th.
As a huge film fan, I still remember when The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring first hit theaters back in 2001. It was quickly followed by The Two Towers in 2002, and then the incredible conclusion, The Return of the King, in 2003. The whole trilogy was a massive success, earning close to $3 billion worldwide and racking up an amazing 17 Academy Awards! The Return of the King was particularly celebrated, winning 11 Oscars on its own – including Best Picture, which put it in a tie for the most awards ever received by a single film.
Ten years after The Lord of the Rings, Peter Jackson revisited Middle-earth to create The Hobbit as a three-part prequel. The films – The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, and The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies – were released in 2012, 2013, and 2014. Ian McKellen reprised his role as Gandalf, and Andy Serkis returned as Gollum, and will also direct and star in a future film called The Hunter for Gollum.
You can now watch all versions of The Lord of the Rings movies on HBO Max. Plus, a new film, The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, is planned for release in theaters on December 17, 2027.
