The Look Book Goes to New York Film Festival

Meriem Bennani and Orian Yani Barki (shown in the image) are filmmakers based in Bedford-Stuyvesant and the Lower East Side.

The movie ‘So Bouchra’ is an animated story about a lesbian coyote revealing her identity to her mother, who is a heart doctor. According to the filmmaker, Orian, it’s a deeply personal film based on real conversations between Meriem and her mother, exploring themes of love, acceptance, family, and the experience of being part of the diaspora.

How did the screening go?

Meriem: Since New York is where I’m from, we had a lot of friends and family there – everyone was really excited! The audience was definitely a little biased, but it was fantastic.

Someone noticed Orian and Meriem seemed to be matching! Orian explained that she often borrows clothes from Meriem, and the blazer she’s currently wearing actually belongs to her.

Meriem said it was really hot today. She’d planned to wear a suit, but then decided it was too warm for one.

I know English Teacher season two just came out, which you’re in.

I appear in the first and seventh episodes, and I have a significant amount of screen time. My face has been featured prominently in all the promotional materials, which makes me think it’s time to discuss a higher salary.

What is the worst you’ve ever bombed onstage?

I experienced something incredible at Texas Christian University two weeks ago: a full 45 minutes of complete silence from the audience. While I admit I’m a little intimidated by Gen Z, I have nothing but admiration for that crowd. I truly loved being there with them, and I’d do anything for anyone who shared that moment.

How many times have you been to the festival?

I’m not sure exactly how many times, but I remember seeing *Antichrist* when I first came here. There were ambulances outside because several people were fainting. It was an amazing and exciting experience – it really made me realize how powerful movies can be.

What was it like to direct a film completely in French?

I’ve always associated French with movies. Even though I don’t actually speak the language, that’s how this film always sounded to me – like a beautiful soundtrack to a silent movie I was imagining. It felt like I was watching a film with subtitles, and French was simply the audio.

What is your go-to movie snack?

I don’t have any teeth, so I can’t enjoy movie snacks like I used to. Buttered popcorn was always my favorite! Now, my go-to food is actually pesto with radishes – just a little tip, since I can’t bite into much anymore.

How are you liking New York so far?

I’m currently staying in the Bronx, and it’s a lot more relaxed than Manhattan. I took the subway to get here, but they really need to adjust the air conditioning – I ended up catching a cold from it! The AC is incredibly powerful here; I’m not sure how anyone can handle it.

I appear in the first and seventh episodes, and I’m featured quite a bit. They’ve used my image in all the advertising, so I think it’s time for a raise.

I’ve always associated French with movies. Even though I don’t actually speak the language, that’s how I imagined this film sounding – like a beautiful soundtrack to a subtitled movie playing in my head.

How are you liking New York so far?

I’m really glad I chose to stay in the Bronx this trip. Manhattan always feels so hectic, you know? Getting here on the subway wasn’t the best, though – they really blast the AC, and I think it gave me a cold! Seriously, it’s so powerful, I don’t know how anyone survives that ride without getting sick.
