The Long Walk star reveals eye-watering number of miles they’d walk each day

In a nod to the title’s meaning, David Jonsson, the star of the upcoming film, shared details about the substantial distances they walked daily on location.

Under the guidance of director Francis Lawrence, the movie originated from a novel penned by Stephen King, writing under the alias Richard Bachman. This gripping tale unfolds in a post-apocalyptic America where a band of young men are compelled to maintain a speed of at least 3 miles per hour in a life-threatening competition.

The Long Walk” movie, released in 2025, was an outstanding production. Our five-star review praised it for being intense, emotionally moving, and almost perfect. The storyline is about a contest where the participants must keep walking until only one remains, and if they ever stop, they perish.

Last month, a viral movie theater stunt involved viewers walking throughout an entire 108-minute film. However, this pales in comparison to what the real actors endured.

The Long Walk cast had to walk for miles on set each day 

In a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, Jonsson (the actor portraying Peter McVries) revealed that during filming for The Long Walk, the cast often covered distances of up to 15 miles per day, with certain days reaching an astonishing 32-mile hike.

To help you understand better, a marathon spans approximately 41.8 kilometers, not just a casual stroll but something they repeated repeatedly, day in and day out, to authentically portray the exhausting saga of King on screen.

It’s understandable that many might find this tiring, but Judy Greer, who portrays Raymond’s mother, Mrs. Garraty, admittedly felt a bit envious. She explained, “I’m quite fond of walking, and they all managed to lose weight while I was left feeling a little green with envy.

When I’m strolling alone on a hot day, there’s nobody offering me cool drinks or fresh air.”

“I don’t encounter anyone providing cold beverages or fresh breezes while walking by myself in the heat.”

Both paraphrases convey the same meaning as the original sentence but are rephrased for clarity and natural language.

Regarding Cooper Hoffman, the lengthy production timeline of the film (since the book was published in 1979) presented an exciting challenge for him.

He shared that whenever people claim a film hasn’t been made in such a unique way before, or mention how challenging it was to produce, it stirs up his competitive spirit, wanting to bring it to life.

As a hardcore fan of both Star Wars and literature, I initially balked at the idea of stepping into a role outside of my beloved Luke Skywalker. But then, something magical happened – I got my hands on Stephen King’s “The Long Walk.” The gripping tale of this brutal competition drew me in, and before I knew it, I found myself saying yes to embodying the terrifying Major. So here I am, leaving my Jedi roots behind for a moment, to bring this formidable character to life on screen.

He expressed his disapproval by saying, ‘This is far too violent for me, I can’t stand it.’ But after buying the book, he found that while the premise was shocking, it was merely an intriguing hook to delve into the true essence of the movie, which focuses on the experiences of these young characters as walkers.

That’s where the heart lies – with the walkers, an incredible mix of friendships and rivalries. It truly feels like it belongs to them, with me serving as a character you love to love or hate.
