Now that season 5 is happening, Netflix is considering ways to build out the world of The Lincoln Lawyer, potentially with stories beyond the main plot featuring Mickey Haller.
In the world of books created by Michael Connelly, detectives Harry Bosch and Mickey Haller are established as half-brothers. However, because Harry Bosch now has his own show on Amazon and Mickey Haller’s series is on Netflix, the two characters can’t appear together on screen, even though they’re related in the books.
Despite the end of Bosch: Legacy in 2025, Harry Bosch’s world lives on through Prime Video’s Ballard and the upcoming prequel Bosch: Start of Watch on MGM+. In contrast, Netflix hasn’t yet created any spinoffs for the popular series The Lincoln Lawyer.
Ahead of the February 5th release of The Lincoln Lawyer season 4 on Netflix, co-showrunner Ted Humphrey spoke with ScreenRant‘s Jordan Williams about the possibility of creating spinoff shows. Humphrey confirmed they “definitely envision a larger world for these characters.” While he didn’t share specifics, he mentioned that ideas for spinoffs have explored Mickey Haller’s past, his family, and the important people in his life.
I was wondering if you’ve ever thought about connecting The Lincoln Lawyer stories with the Bosch universe, now that a Bosch prequel series is confirmed. While the two series aren’t currently linked, it would be fascinating to see characters like Legal Siegel and Mickey Haller’s father as younger characters in a prequel setting.
Ted Humphrey responded, “Let’s hope Ted Sarandos hears that! It’s a really interesting idea, and we definitely envision a larger world for these characters.”
Ultimately, it’s the viewers who decide if a show continues, including how many seasons it gets. We’re really focused on developing Mickey’s character by exploring his personal life, family, and the relationships he has with the people he considers family. We’re considering all of these aspects as we move forward.
Now that Netflix has renewed The Lincoln Lawyer for a fifth season, it’s clear CEO Ted Sarandos has confidence in the show’s future, even before the latest season’s ratings are known. Creator Terry Humphrey is hoping Sarandos will take that confidence a step further and allow Humphrey and co-showrunner Dailyn Rodriguez to explore other stories and time periods within the world of The Lincoln Lawyer.
Season one of The Lincoln Lawyer introduces Mickey Haller, a talented but struggling defense attorney in Los Angeles. The show hints at a deep and interesting backstory for Mickey – his life, career, and the people he considers family – which has mostly been revealed in short glimpses. These details could easily be expanded into their own separate stories.
There’s a possibility for a Netflix series focusing on Mickey Haller’s early career as a lawyer, showing how he first became known as ‘The Lincoln Lawyer.’ It could also reveal the story of how he and Maggie met and fell in love before their marriage, and explore his beginnings in the legal world.
A prequel to the Lincoln Lawyer could explore the early careers of Mickey Haller’s father, Mickey Haller Sr., and his former law partner, Legal Siegel (Elliott Gould). Both were highly respected and feared lawyers in Los Angeles, and their partnership and reputation significantly shaped the man Mickey Haller is today in the current series.
Dennis “Cisco” Wojciechowski is a fascinating character with a hidden history that could make for a great spinoff series. We first meet Cisco in season one of The Lincoln Lawyer as Lorna’s boyfriend, and he’s soon hired by Mickey as an investigator. Like many people in Mickey’s life, Cisco has a troubled past – he used to be a member of the Road Saints motorcycle gang before joining Mickey’s team. A series focused on Cisco could follow a similar format to Sons of Anarchy, expanding the world of The Lincoln Lawyer with a gritty, character-driven story.
Netflix has many options for continuing the world of The Lincoln Lawyer with new shows, but whether they actually happen depends on how many people watch and enjoy it. After season 4’s performance in February, Netflix will likely decide if they want to explore expanding the series further.
