Mike Flanagan’s new series, The Life of Chuck, will start streaming in December. Before that, Flanagan directed the 2019 film Doctor Sleep, a sequel to The Shining, which was based on a Stephen King story. His first adaptation of King’s work was the 2017 film Gerald’s Game.
The movie The Life of Chuck will start streaming on Hulu on December 26th. It’s been available to buy or rent digitally on platforms like Prime Video since July 29th, but this is the first time viewers can watch it through a streaming service.
Inspired by Stephen King’s short story, The Life of Chuck unfolds the life of Charles “Chuck” Krantz—but in reverse order. Tom Hiddleston portrays Chuck as an adult, with Jacob Tremblay, Benjamin Pajak, and Cody Flanagan playing him at different, younger ages. The film also features a notable cast including Mark Hamill, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Karen Gillan, Nick Offerman, Matthew Lillard, and Rahul Kohli.
After premiering at the 2024 Toronto Film Festival and winning the People’s Choice Award, The Life of Chuck has received mostly good reviews. Critics gave it a 79% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, while audiences scored it even higher at 88%.
Unlike Mike Flanagan’s other work on Netflix and his previous Stephen King adaptations, The Life of Chuck isn’t a horror story. It’s a touching drama with a touch of fantasy. You’ll find it has more in common with a film like The Shawshank Redemption than with King’s scary stories like The Shining or IT.
Following the success of The Life of Chuck, Mike Flanagan is continuing his work adapting stories by Stephen King. He recently finished filming a Carrie TV series for Prime Video, and on October 24th, he shared that it’s already become one of his favorite projects he’s ever worked on.
Mike Flanagan’s upcoming adaptation of Carrie stars Summer H. Howell as Carrie White, Samantha Sloyan as her mother Margaret White, and Amber Midthunder as Rita Desjardin. Siena Agudong will play Sue Snell, and Lillard will portray Henry Grayle. Katee Sackhoff and Kohli also join the cast in currently undisclosed roles.
Mike Flanagan is still developing a series based on Stephen King’s Dark Tower books, but he’s said it will be a lengthy process because of the complex challenges of adapting such a large story. Before that project and Prime Video’s Carrie, fans of Flanagan and King can enjoy The Life of Chuck now streaming on Hulu.
