Nintendo has released the first official images from the upcoming live-action Legend of Zelda movie, which is being produced by Sony Pictures. Fans have been eagerly awaiting this adaptation of the popular video game series, and it’s currently set to premiere in theaters on May 7, 2027.
What do The Legend of Zelda photos show?
New photos shared on X give fans their first glimpse of Benjamin Evan Ainsworth and Bo Bragason as Link and Zelda in the upcoming live-action adaptation of The Legend of Zelda. While the actors have been cast in the lead roles, the studio hasn’t yet announced the rest of the cast or details about the movie’s plot.
A Legend of Zelda movie has been in the works since November 2023. Wes Ball, known for directing The Maze Runner, is directing and producing the film with Joe Hartwick Jr. through their company, Oddball Entertainment. Derek Connolly and T.S. Nowlin collaborated on the screenplay. Sony Pictures and Nintendo are jointly funding the project, and Shigeru Miyamoto, one of the original creators of the Zelda games, and Avi Arad are also producing.
When the live-action Legend of Zelda movie was announced, Miyamoto shared that he’s been working on it for years with producer Avi Arad, known for many blockbuster films. He explained he specifically asked Arad to co-produce, and development is now officially underway with strong involvement from Nintendo. Miyamoto acknowledged it will take time to finish, but expressed his hope that fans will be excited to see the final result.
The Legend of Zelda series began in 1986, created by Shigeru Miyamoto and Takashi Tezuka. It follows the journey of Link, a young elf, and Princess Zelda as they team up to protect their kingdom, Hyrule, from the villainous Ganon. Over the years, the series has grown to include more than 20 games, with the newest addition, The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom, released in 2024.
