In April, we’ll see The Last of Us Season 2 unfold, introducing significant storyline shifts. The dynamic between Tommy (Gabriel Luna) and Maria (Rutina Wesley) will shift due to their new shared responsibility as parents. The initial season, which was adapted from one of this generation’s most praised video games, indeed altered certain narrative elements to extend the series–and it produced one of the standout episodes in television that year.
Max has just unveiled fresh images for the approaching season that appear to conceal any plot details–Joel (Pedro Pascal) is seen seated, Ellie (Bella Ramsey) and Dina (Isabela Merced) are depicted riding horses in town, Abby (Kaitlyn Dever) with her WLF associates, and a snapshot of Tommy, Maria, and their son together.

During a more subdued scene in Season 1, Tommy reveals to Joel that Maria is several months pregnant with their child, and Tommy expresses his belief that he will make a good father. When Joel replies, “We’ll see,” it triggers an argument between the brothers, as Joel suggests that Tommy’s new role as a father doesn’t absolve him from the challenges they still face together, and implies that Joel himself had contemplated giving up on life.
In the game, Tommy and Maria currently lack offspring. Introducing a son into Tommy’s narrative could drastically affect his decision to travel to Seattle in search of Abby. Moreover, having a wife and child might account for their eventual separation.
2023 saw showrunner Craig Mazin commenting that while he can’t promise events from the game will exactly transpire in the show, there will certainly be a captivating adventure full of surprises. He noted that both familiar elements from the game and new, purposeful additions might leave viewers astonished. The main goal isn’t to provoke fear for social media engagement but rather to tell an engaging story as effectively as possible.
On the same day as Season 2’s debut, The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered will make its long-awaited arrival on PC, starting from April 3.
