Bruce Straley was a leading figure at Naughty Dog from 1999 to 2017, co-directing the hugely successful games The Last of Us and Uncharted 4. Despite this success, he stepped away from game development for several years. Now, he’s providing more insight into why he left, expanding on previous statements he made about his departure.
After 18 years with the company, Straley felt it was time for a change. He explained to Polygon that he needed fresh challenges and a chance to express his creativity. While he acknowledged there might be future opportunities, he ultimately felt he was putting a lot of effort into something he didn’t personally own.
Straley explained he stayed at Naughty Dog because he considered them the best in the industry for the types of games he wanted to create. He also didn’t want to navigate a new, potentially complicated work environment or company culture elsewhere.
Ultimately, the decision was whether to keep working for someone else, putting all my energy into creating ideas, characters, and things that could become a franchise. I was well-compensated and appreciated in that role, but I felt it was time to become independent and explore my own vision. I wanted to develop my ideas and build a new team, even if it meant risking failure – but I wanted that failure to be on my own terms, resulting from my own choices.
Wildflower Interactive, the new studio led by Bruce Straley, revealed its first game, Coven of the Chicken Foot, at The Game Awards. This single-player adventure is a departure from Straley’s previous work, featuring no dialogue. Players will guide Gertie, a witch, and her animal friend as they work to keep a promise. A release date hasn’t been announced yet.
