As a big fan of Naughty Dog, it seems like they’re really focusing on delivering amazing single-player experiences now. It’s a bit sad, but after Sony decided to cancel the online multiplayer game they were working on for The Last of Us, it’s clear they’re going back to what they do best: incredible story-driven adventures.
Okay, so it’s pretty clear Sony’s big push for games-as-a-service has cooled off, especially after the launch of Concord didn’t exactly blow everyone away. They’re not totally abandoning the idea, but they’ve definitely scaled back – a lot fewer of those kinds of games are in development at their studios right now, and some planned releases have been pushed back or even cancelled. It feels like they’re re-evaluating things, which is probably a good move.
One of the things affected by these changes was a multiplayer game called The Last of Us: Factions, created by Naughty Dog as a spin-off to The Last of Us. The game was canceled in late 2024.
Single player above all
Now that the developers have canceled Factions, they’ve suggested they’re refocusing on making large, story-driven single-player games, much like Sony has been doing lately.
Nearly a year after the cancellation of “Factions,” Jason Rubin confirmed the developer’s plans in an article celebrating the team’s 40th anniversary. Naughty Dog’s co-founder said he hopes the studio will continue to create games with strong stories and memorable characters, like the ones that made them well-known.
I’m hoping Naughty Dog continues to create the kind of high-quality, meaningful entertainment they’re known for – telling the stories they want to tell, with real depth and impact.
I’m confident our studio will keep creating incredible games centered around compelling stories and characters that explore what it means to be human.
This doesn’t rule out multiplayer in future Naughty Dog games, but it won’t be a priority. The studio will primarily concentrate on creating single-player experiences, beginning with their new game, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet.
