The L.A. Dodgers Won the World Series and Late Night This Week

Late-night talk shows stepped up to help people struggling with hunger after the recent government shutdown. Stephen Colbert shared QR codes on Monday’s show linking viewers to food charities, and even included a fun video of a baby monkey. Jimmy Kimmel took a more direct approach, turning his studio’s parking lot into a food donation center – something he’s also done during emergencies like the California wildfires earlier this year.

Beyond the films, it was a wild week for elections! California passed Prop 50, New York City elected Zohran Mamdani, and unbelievably, the Virginia Democrat involved in that texting scandal won anyway. It was a truly surprising night. I even saw Jimmy Fallon celebrating, calling it a major blow to Trump. It’s funny, because he recently said he didn’t want to get too political on The Tonight Show, and he got a lot of flak for that from viewers who like more pointed commentary. But honestly, as a regular watcher of his monologue, he is still doing plenty of political bits. It’s not the whole show, sure, but he’s pretty scathing about Trump – calling him a dictator and everything. He’s actually sharper than people realize, and maybe even sharper than he thinks! Check out clip No. 4 – it’s a comparison between Trump and Manson, and it’s pretty something.

Andy Cohen Isn’t Looking Inward

What makes Andy Cohen different from other late-night hosts is his willingness to say what’s on his mind. He recently admitted he’s never been interested in trying ayahuasca because he’s not sure he wants to deeply understand himself – a surprisingly insightful admission. In another moment that same night, he confessed to wanting to be featured on the website wikiFeet. It’s unusual to hear other talk show hosts share such personal and perhaps unexpected desires, but that honesty is actually what makes Cohen so relatable. And for the record, he is listed on wikiFeet.

The Tonight Show Goes Long on Puns

This week’s award for most drawn-out moment goes to The Tonight Show. It was a playful exchange of puns between Tariq Trotter and Jimmy Fallon on Tuesday, and they really stretched it out for comedic effect. It was a clever, extended joke – a real ‘rake’ – and I appreciate how long they made us wait for the payoff, referencing the show Is It Cake?

Guillermo del Toro Sells Out

This week on The Late Show, there were two fun product placements. On Monday, Tom Hanks promoted his actual coffee brand. Then, on Thursday, Guillermo del Toro playfully advertised a made-up energy drink – he was a natural! It would be great to see him do real commercials. The energy drink can’s design, with its repeating pattern, was particularly clever. By the way, the actor who played Frankenstein’s monster also appeared on the show last week, still in costume, and participated in the “Colbert Questionert.” It was a smart move to have him in two sketches while he was already wearing all that makeup.

Seth Meyers Gets the Spider League Bump

Everyone knows attention-grabbing content does well, but the online group ‘Spider League’ seems to be doing exceptionally well. Comedians Tim Robinson and Zach Kanin appeared on Late Night with Seth Meyers to talk about their project, The Chair Company, but the conversation quickly turned to Spider League – a group chat where they and others share pictures of spiders and argue about how dangerous they are. Seth Meyers isn’t a fan of the group, and has mentioned his dislike on his show before. Now, the members of Spider League feel the same way about him, with Kanin calling Meyers an “enemy of the League” who uses them for viewership. Whether Spider League actually boosts ratings is up for debate, but the fact that it’s being talked about – like in this article – proves it’s captured people’s attention.

That recent Late Night episode was fantastic. Stavros Halkias was a really funny guest, and Seth Meyers screaming “Crocs!” during “Ya Burnt” – it reminded me of someone from Boston yelling “Sawx!” – was a highlight of the show.

Even Guillermo Fangirls at the Dodgers

It was fantastic that people beyond Dodgers fans got to see how charismatic Kiké Hernández is. He’s genuinely hilarious! I think he’d be great in acting after baseball, kind of like Marshawn Lynch. Seeing the Dodgers’ win boost everyone’s mood on the show was awesome. Jimmy Kimmel was especially excited to talk about the seventh game, and the energy was contagious – even guests like Elizabeth Olsen and Josh Brolin got caught up in it. Brolin quickly changed into Dodgers gear, but Olsen was absolutely thrilled. She even told Kimmel she hadn’t been passionate about anything until she became a Dodgers fan eight years ago – that’s quite a statement! And it was so fun to see Guillermo get to hold the championship trophy!
