Lionsgate Television is developing a TV series based on the popular young adult book series, *The Inheritance Games*, by Jennifer Lynn Barnes. This move comes as interest in young adult stories is growing again, a trend Lionsgate helped start years ago.
Lionsgate Television and Temple Hill Entertainment are partnering to create a television series based on Jennifer Lynn Barnes’ popular book series, *The Inheritance Games*. The books have sold over six million copies globally, and the first book quickly became a New York Times bestseller. Barnes will also be a producer on the show, with Temple Hill executive producing. This series adds to Lionsgate’s growing list of young adult franchises, which already includes *The Twilight Saga* and *The Hunger Games*.
Avery Grambs is just trying to get through high school, earn a scholarship, and escape her current life. Everything changes when billionaire Tobias Hawthorne unexpectedly leaves her his entire fortune. The mystery is, Avery has no idea who he was or why he chose her. The popular young adult series, *The Inheritance Games*, now includes seven books: *The Inheritance Games* (2020), *The Hawthorne Legacy* (2021), *The Final Gambit* (2022), *The Brothers Hawthorne* (2023), *The Grandest Game* (2024), *Glorious Rivals* (2025), and *Games Untold: An Inheritance Games Collection* (2024).
Temple Hill Entertainment has produced a number of popular film series, including *The Twilight Saga* with Lionsgate, *The Maze Runner* trilogy, *The Fault in Our Stars*, *Fatherhood*, and *Smile*. They are currently collaborating with Lionsgate again on *Midnight Sun*, a new *Twilight* film for Netflix. *Midnight Sun* is based on Stephenie Meyer’s 2020 novel of the same name, which revisits the story of *Twilight* from the point of view of Edward Cullen, the character played by Robert Pattinson in the original movies.
YA Adaptations Are All the Rage Again
Lionsgate is developing a film based on *The Inheritance Games*, following the success Prime Video has had this summer with shows adapted from young adult novels. *The Summer I Turned Pretty* was a particularly big hit, attracting 25 million viewers worldwide in its first week, and a movie continuation is planned. Prime Video is also working on a second season of *Overcompensating*, which is one of the few shows in its young adult lineup not based on an existing book.
Prime Video is planning more shows for young adults, including series based on the books *Off Campus* by Elle Kennedy and *Fourth Wing* by Rebecca Yarros. Meanwhile, YA adaptations are still popular in theaters. Lionsgate is currently filming the sixth *Hunger Games* movie, *Sunrise on the Reaping*, set to release in November 2026, and Netflix is developing a final movie to conclude another popular YA series.
