Good luck, because the first look at The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping is here! This teaser trailer arrives a year before the movie hits theaters.
This short video offers a first look at the upcoming story. It also provides a glimpse of a younger Haymitch Abernathy, portrayed by Joseph Zada, and hints at events surrounding the 50th Hunger Games.
The new movie, The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, is a prequel set 24 years before the original trilogy. It will focus on the second Quarter Quell, a special Hunger Games that’s typically even more brutal than the regular games. The Quarter Quell featured in this movie was particularly harsh, as it forced twice as many teenagers to compete.
At the start of the video, Drusilla, played by Close, announces, “Welcome, Panem, to the glorious reaping of District 12.”
The trailer also showcases what’s new in these upcoming games, with a dramatic announcement: “Double the tributes, double the honor. It’s time for the second Quarter Quell.” Along with the countdown, viewers get their first glimpse of the actors playing Haymitch Abernathy, portrayed by Joseph Zada, and President Snow, played by Ralph Fiennes.
The logline promises “These games are going to be different.”
The new book, The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, returns to the world of Panem. It tells the story of a young Haymitch Abernathy, twenty-four years before the original Hunger Games, beginning on the day of the Fiftieth Hunger Games – also called the Second Quarter Quell.
The new movie, Sunrise on the Reaping, is the sixth installment in The Hunger Games series, or the fifth if you combine the three parts of the final story. It’s the second film to expand the universe beyond the original trilogy, following 2023’s The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes. This movie is both a sequel to The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes and a prequel to the original Hunger Games films, taking place 24 years before the first movie’s events.
As a huge fan of the Hunger Games films, I’m really excited to see Francis Lawrence back as director! He’s tackling a new prequel story this time, and thankfully, Billy Ray is writing the script. The cast is absolutely incredible – we’re talking Glenn Close, Ralph Fiennes, and so many other amazing actors like Jesse Plemons, Elle Fanning, Kieran Culkin, Billy Porter, Edvin Ryding, Iris Apatow, Mckenna Grace, Ben Wang, and even Maya Hawke! It’s shaping up to be a really strong addition to the series.
The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping will be released in theaters on Nov. 20, 2026.
