The Hunger Games Franchise: Still Relevant & Expanding In 2026

Jennifer Lawrence is a highly successful and award-winning actress, known for her work in over 20 films and a few television series. She’s especially famous for her role in a popular science fiction series that remains successful and continues to grow, even in 2026.

Jennifer Lawrence first received critical acclaim for her role in Winter’s Bone, then gained wider recognition in X-Men First Class and The Hunger Games. It was The Hunger Games that really launched her career and created a successful movie franchise that continues today. She starred as Katniss Everdeen in the original Hunger Games films: The Hunger Games, Catching Fire, and both Mockingjay movies.

The Hunger Games remains a popular franchise, consistently appearing in streaming charts and continuing to grow with new books and films. The movies are not only high quality, but their themes still resonate with audiences today.

The Hunger Games Franchise Continues To Be Relevant

Inspired by Suzanne Collins’ books, The Hunger Games is set in a futuristic, post-apocalyptic country called Panem. Panem is divided into 12 districts controlled by the Capitol, a powerful ruling body that unfairly favors some districts while others struggle with poverty and decline.

I live in a world where, years ago, the districts tried to fight against the Capitol and failed. As a result, District 13 was completely destroyed, and now, every year, the Capitol holds the Hunger Games as a reminder of our defeat. It’s terrifying, but here’s how it works: they randomly pick one boy and one girl – we call them ‘tributes’ – from each of the twelve districts. Then, these tributes are thrown into a dangerous arena and forced to fight each other to the death. Whoever survives gets a reward – food, supplies, everything they need – and their district gets extra resources too. It’s a brutal system, but it’s how things are.

To add to everything else, the Hunger Games are broadcast across the entire country, both to entertain people and to demonstrate the Capitol’s control. The story really kicks off when Katniss steps forward to take her sister’s place as a tribute, and ultimately, she becomes the spark for a full-scale rebellion.

Even though The Hunger Games takes place in a fictional world, it deeply connected with viewers, and sadly, things haven’t improved enough in the real world for the story to feel outdated. The franchise’s quality is a big reason for its lasting success, but its themes continue to make it relatable and important.

The Hunger Games Franchise Will Continue To Expand In 2026

Although Jennifer Lawrence finished filming The Hunger Games films in 2014, the story continues with new books and movies. Suzanne Collins published Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes in 2020 and Sunrise on the Reaping in 2025. A movie adaptation of Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes came out in 2023, and a film based on Sunrise on the Reaping is scheduled for release in 2026.

Both Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes and Sunrise on the Reaping tell stories that happen before the events of the Hunger Games movies. Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes focuses on a young Coriolanus Snow, while Sunrise on the Reaping shows the 50th Hunger Games and introduces a young Haymitch Abernathy as a competitor. Sunrise on the Reaping is scheduled to be released on November 20, 2026.

Jennifer Lawrence Is Coming Back To The Hunger Games

As a huge fan of The Hunger Games, I was so excited to hear Jennifer Lawrence is coming back! Even though Sunrise on the Reaping is a prequel, taking place long before Katniss volunteers as tribute, she and Josh Hutcherson will both be reprising their iconic roles. The movie is officially slated for December 2025, and I can’t wait to see them back in action!

It’s still unknown how characters Lawrence and Hutcherson will appear in Sunrise on the Reaping, but the film could adapt the book’s epilogue, which jumps forward in time to show an older Haymitch after the rebellion. The world of The Hunger Games has plenty of stories left to tell, and its central ideas remain relevant today.
