Even with lots of other streaming services available, Netflix remains incredibly popular, largely thanks to its original shows and movies. Many of these Netflix Originals are now considered some of the best TV shows ever made, and they’re perfect for watching all the way through in one sitting.

As a horror fan, I have to say The Haunting of Hill House really impressed me. What sets it apart from a lot of other stuff on Netflix isn’t just the scares, but how deeply it explores family dynamics. It’s a genuinely emotional show. And honestly, it’s refreshing that it doesn’t rely on cheap jump scares or excessive gore. It’s much more of a psychological horror, really digging into themes of grief, trauma, and guilt – and it does so in a really compelling way.

Shirley Jackson’s The Haunting of Hill House unfolds its story and mysteries at a deliberate pace, though it doesn’t rely on the typical ‘slow burn’ horror format. What truly drives the emotional impact and scares aren’t jump scares or visuals, but the well-developed characters and their personal traumas.

Why The Haunting of Hill House Is One Of Netflix’s Most Bingeable & Rewatchable Shows

Beyond being considered one of the greatest TV shows on Netflix, The Haunting of Hill House is incredibly captivating and easy to watch again and again. While ten episodes might seem short to tell the full story of the Crain family and its members, the show’s excellent writing manages to cover everything—and more—in that timeframe.

With its rich details, especially within the scenes inside Hill House itself, The Haunting of Hill House subtly populates its setting with ghosts – some easy to spot, others hidden in plain sight. This adds to the constant, unsettling feeling of being watched. The show’s overall quality, combined with these intricate details, makes it a compelling watch that rewards repeat viewings.

Why Mike Flanagan’s Other Netflix Show Didn’t Match The Haunting of Hill House

Mike Flanagan started working with Netflix on The Haunting of Hill House, and went on to create The Haunting of Bly Manor, Midnight Mass, The Midnight Club, and The Fall of the House of Usher. While all of these shows were well-made, none quite matched the success or quality of his first series, The Haunting of Hill House.

While The Haunting of Bly Manor is part of the same series as The Haunting of Hill House, it focused less on scares and more on love and emotional storytelling. Midnight Mass was popular with some, but its deliberate, slow pacing and extensive dialogue turned others away.

While shows like The Midnight Club and The Fall of the House of Usher had their own merits, they didn’t resonate with viewers the same way The Haunting of Hill House did. The Midnight Club was geared towards a younger audience, and The Fall of the House of Usher didn’t quite capture the emotional power of Hill House.
