While the original series concluded in 2025, fans can look forward to a new spinoff. This upcoming show will be set several years after the finale of the original.
Before its premiere on April 8th, The Testaments is already receiving a lot of positive buzz. Early reviews are in, and they’re overwhelmingly favorable, giving the show an 87% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
The Testaments’ Debut Rivals The Handmaid’s Tale in a Good Way
The show’s score is expected to change as more reviews are published, especially since the current 87% is based on just 15 reviews. Still, it’s starting out higher than The Handmaid’s Tale, which has an 83% approval rating and a 57% audience score. Because the new series hasn’t premiered yet, we don’t have any audience feedback to factor in.
Recent seasons of The Handmaid’s Tale have received varying feedback, with the latest season showing a significant difference between critics’ and viewers’ opinions – critics gave it a high 87% Fresh rating, while audiences only rated it 43%. This suggests there’s still interest in the world of Gilead, even with stories that don’t directly involve June Osborne, and that the new spinoff has potential.
With The Handmaid’s Tale already winning 15 Primetime Emmy Awards, the new spinoff – created by the same person, Bruce Miller – getting off to a strong start is very promising.
The Testaments centers around three women, including Agnes, who is revealed to be June’s daughter Hannah. Throughout the six seasons of The Handmaid’s Tale, June desperately tried to save Hannah, but wasn’t able to. Now, in this new series, Hannah is grown up and begins to discover who she is after a sheltered and religious upbringing in Gilead. Actress Chase Infiniti, known for her role in One Battle After Another, portrays the older Hannah.
Aunt Lydia, played by Anne Dowd, is back this season. She’s now in charge of a school that trains future wives.
Let me tell you about Daisy, a brand new character this season! She’s a teenager from Canada, and her world gets completely shaken up when she discovers this shocking secret about her family – it turns out she has a connection to Gilead. Lucy Halliday plays her, and honestly, she’s amazing at portraying Daisy’s shock and confusion. I’m really invested in her story already!
The Testaments premieres on Apr. 8 on Hulu.
