Viewers can soon rewatch what many consider the best war movie ever made. Starting November 1st, Paramount+ is adding Steven Spielberg’s 1998 epic, Saving Private Ryan, to its streaming library. Along with this classic, subscribers will also have access to films like American Beauty, Catch Me If You Can, Days of Thunder, and The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, plus many more titles this month.
The film Saving Private Ryan opens with Captain John H. Miller and his squad landing at Omaha Beach during the Normandy invasion. Despite heavy losses, the Americans succeed in driving back the Germans. Shortly after, Miller receives a unique and challenging assignment: three brothers have already been killed in combat, and their fourth brother, James Francis Ryan, is missing in action. Miller is tasked with assembling a team to venture behind enemy lines, locate Ryan, and ensure he makes it home safely.
Captain John Miller, played by Tom Hanks, leads a squad of soldiers into enemy territory with a difficult mission: to find Private James Ryan. Ryan’s three brothers have already been killed in action. As they search for him amidst the horrors of war, each soldier faces their own challenges and finds the inner strength to persevere with integrity and bravery, even when the future is unclear.
Released in the summer of 1998, Saving Private Ryan was a huge hit, earning over $482 million on a $70 million budget. It was the second highest-grossing film of the year, behind Armageddon. Critics also loved the movie, praising director Spielberg’s realistic and moving portrayal of war. It remains highly rated today, with a 94% score from critics and a 95% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
During awards season, Spielberg once again proved he was one of the era’s most impactful filmmakers. His film earned the Golden Globes for Best Drama and Best Director, and he also received the Best Director Oscar. However, many were surprised when Shakespeare in Love won the Best Picture Oscar instead.

Films about war, like classics such as Apocalypse Now, Platoon, and Steven Spielberg’s Schindler’s List, are incredibly important. However, many people believe Spielberg’s 1998 film about World War II is the most definitive movie on the subject.
The film begins with a powerfully emotional scene and then unfolds a story about the bonds of loyalty, brotherhood, and honor. It’s an inspiring and grand tale about discovering compassion even in the darkest of circumstances. Spielberg skillfully blends the dramatic story with realistic depictions of battle. Despite the unbelievable premise, he maintains a believable tone, immersing the viewer in a fantastic story set in a truly harrowing environment.
