Ridley Scott is a highly respected and impactful director known for his work in science fiction and action. He consistently creates films that capture the public’s attention and have become incredibly influential.
Despite being one of Ridley Scott’s best films in the last quarter-century, The Last Duel didn’t perform well in theaters and has largely been overlooked. Released in 2021, it’s a remarkably well-made historical fantasy and arguably Scott’s best work since Gladiator.
Ridley Scott Has Had A Mixed Career In The 21st Century
Ridley Scott was already a highly respected director before his later work, having created classics like Alien (1979) and Blade Runner (1982). Even if he’d only made those two films, he would likely be remembered as one of cinema’s most influential directors. However, he didn’t stop there, and went on to direct some of the most ambitious and successful blockbuster films of recent times.
Following the massive success of Gladiator, director Ridley Scott found it challenging to create another film with the same broad appeal. While movies like Hannibal, Black Hawk Down, Matchstick Men, and Kingdom of Heaven were all entertaining, none resonated with audiences as deeply or left a lasting impression like his Roman epic. Later films, including The Martian and Alien: Covenant, suggested a creative resurgence, but they didn’t quite reach the same level of impact.
Everything shifted when Ridley Scott moved away from biographical dramas focused on recent history and began exploring stories from much further in the past. Released in 2021 (alongside the underwhelming House of Gucci), the historical fantasy The Last Duel felt like a welcome return to the Ridley Scott that audiences had admired for years. The film is captivating from beginning to end, with strong performances from the entire cast.
The Last Duel Deserves Far More Love From Movie Fans
Despite not being a big hit with audiences in 2021, The Last Duel was praised by critics, earning some of the best reviews of director Ridley Scott’s recent work. The film stood out thanks to its impressive sets, beautiful costumes, and cleverly constructed story. It felt like a fully realized and thoughtfully crafted film.
Ridley Scott’s The Last Duel explores the aftermath of a sexual assault through the eyes of three characters, each with a different account of what happened. The film examines themes of gender roles, the justification of violence, and how stories can be twisted and misunderstood. Structured like a series of conflicting testimonies, The Last Duel skillfully presents the same events from multiple viewpoints without losing the audience’s attention. Its masterful editing and pacing are among its greatest strengths.
Adam Driver and Matt Damon deliver stunning performances as two men forced into a duel to defend their reputations. Jodie Comer is captivating as the woman at the center of the conflict, a character whose voice and experience have been suppressed. Her powerful portrayal anchors the film and elevates the work of Driver and Damon, with the emotional weight of The Last Duel ultimately resting on her shoulders.
It’s disappointing that more people didn’t appreciate Ridley Scott’s return to form with the excellent historical drama The Last Duel. While he’s since directed two more large-scale historical films, Napoleon among them, neither has quite matched the thoughtful detail or exciting atmosphere of that 2021 film.
