In the upcoming movie titled “The Gorge,” Miles Teller and Anya Taylor-Joy take on the roles of elite snipers who have been given a secret mission by their respective nations. The film is directed by Scott Derrickson, known for his work on “Doctor Strange” and “The Black Phone.” In collaboration with screenwriter Zach Dean, this Apple TV+ exclusive blends elements of science-fiction, action, and horror to create an unpredictable cinematic experience.

One of the primary advantages of “The Gorge” is its unpredictability, as the directors, Derrickson and Dean, frequently change the plot’s course, even when we believe we have figured it out. They draw inspiration from various genres, yet skillfully blend these elements to create a unique and exhilarating narrative experience for the audience.

In a different context: Teller portrays Levi, a previous Marine sniper who was diagnosed with PTSD four years back and was deemed incapable for duty. Instead of battling it, a disgruntled Levi opted for retirement and took up work as a military contractor. One night, Levi gets a message urging him to Camp Pendleton where he encounters the high-ranking Bartholomew (played by Sigourney Weaver). She requires someone proficient, trustworthy, with no familial ties for a highly confidential solo assignment. Seeing it as an opportunity to demonstrate his worth, Levi consents.

As a movie buff, I’m whisked off by the military to an unspecified location in an unknown corner of the globe. My mission, like my destination, remains shrouded in secrecy. For the upcoming year, I’ll be stationed atop a self-sustaining observation post, nestled precariously on a cliff overlooking a colossal chasm. My role is that of a high-tech handyman, ensuring the functioning of the sensors, minigun emplacements, and “cloakers”. I’ll have radio contact every month, but other than that, I’m cut off from the world outside. And let me emphasize, I’m not allowed to establish any contact with a similar post on the opposite side of the chasm. After a year, my relief will arrive, and I can return home.

Upon his arrival, Levi is met by J.D. (Sope Dirisu), the soldier he’s relieving, who takes him on a tour of the tower. Towering above, it overlooks a vast chasm shrouded in thick fog, concealing whatever lies beneath. J.D. subsequently informs Levi about details not disclosed by the military. Essentially, various governments have covertly operated the tower since World War II. Moreover, Levi’s role isn’t to prevent people from going into the chasm; instead, it’s to ensure whatever is within the chasm remains contained.

In the meantime, Drasa (Taylor-Joy), a Lithuanian marksman serving Russia, assumes duty in the East Tower across the ravine. Levi observes this change but adheres to his ‘no interaction’ rule, for now. After spending a month in solitude, they gradually establish contact through hand signals and powerful binoculars. Surprisingly, their bond evolves into an unforeseen relationship.

However, let me share a hint about the film without giving too much away. The second half of the movie presents quite a few unanticipated twists and turns. Some are filled with pulse-pounding action, while others edge into a chilling horror realm. Moreover, the cinematic universe unfolds in an original, imaginative, and spine-tingling manner under the direction of Derrickson, Dean, cinematographer Dan Laustsen, and the skilled visual effects team. As you watch, try to guess the secrets hidden within the gorge – but remember, less is more when it comes to this film.

Concerning Teller and Taylor-Joy, they are well-versed in their roles and seem to enjoy enacting them. However, their dialogue occasionally veers into the cheesy. Additionally, their relationship develops rather swiftly, resulting in a sudden change in Levi’s character that might have benefited from more exploration. Regardless, they both suit their characters quite well, especially when the action intensifies and Derrickson allows his creative flair to flourish. “The Gorge” will be available on Apple TV+ starting February 14th.
