The First Destiny Game Gets Strange Update For New Years

On January 5th, an unexpected update emerged for the original Destiny game, leaving players puzzled. To their surprise, the main hub, known as the Tower, was mysteriously adorned with holiday ornaments.

In the realm of Destiny, an event known as The Dawning is comparable to Christmas. It left players perplexed when it resurfaced in the original Destiny game, given that Bungie, its developer, ceased support for it following the release of Destiny 2 in 2017. However, this update lacks any new quests, items, or events; instead, it focuses solely on cosmetic changes.

It’s plausible that this is just an unintentional carryover from the past. YouTube content creator Breshi analyzed the game’s design files and speculated that this update originated from abandoned content related to The Taken King’s Dawning event in 2016. Breshi surmised that this event was supposed to launch on January 5, 2016, but when it was canceled, Bungie temporarily scheduled it for release on January 5, 2025 as a makeshift solution, with plans to eliminate it at a later date.

Even though it’s been seven years since Bungie stopped providing official updates, the online servers for the initial Destiny game continue to operate, with players still signing in. It’s possible that Bungie overlooked this abandoned event, leading to an unexpected update nearly a decade later. So far, Bungie has remained silent about the matter and it’s uncertain if they will take steps to revert The Tower back to its original form.

Bungie continues to develop Destiny 2 and their upcoming project Marathon, but the release date for Marathon remains uncertain. It’s been rumored that a spin-off game named Payback has been shelved, and it doesn’t appear that Destiny 3 is on the horizon. Meanwhile, a mobile game titled Destiny Rising is being created by NetEase.
