For decades, Hollywood has brought Stephen King’s novels to life in movies and TV shows, extending the reach of his stories beyond the books themselves. Now, streaming services are finding new success with an adaptation of King’s debut novel.
Originally airing on ABC in 1994, the mini-series The Stand is now popular again on Prime Video, introducing a new audience to the show. It’s based on Stephen King’s epic novel, first published in 1978, and stars Gary Sinise as Stu Redman and Molly Ringwald as Frannie Goldsmith.
The original broadcast of the story aired on ABC from May 8th to May 12th, 1994. Stephen King wrote the screenplay based on his own novel, and Mick Garris directed it. However, it took many years to bring this adaptation to the screen, considering the long and difficult development process of The Stand.
Stephen King also acted in the miniseries The Stand, playing the character Teddy Weizak. The show featured a talented cast including Jamey Sheridan, Laura San Giacomo, Miguel Ferrer, Rob Lowe, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and Ruby Dee. Horror director Sam Raimi made a brief appearance as Bobby Terry.
The Stand received Emmy nominations in several categories, including Outstanding Miniseries, Art Direction, Cinematography, and Music Composition.
Although it didn’t win awards for acting or writing, the miniseries The Stand received two Emmys for its exceptional makeup and sound mixing. Many people still consider it to be one of the most successful adaptations of Stephen King’s work.
Stephen King is having a big year! His show, Welcome to Derry, a prequel to IT, is doing very well on HBO and will finish its first season in December. Plus, movie versions of his novels The Long Walk and The Running Man came out in theaters earlier this year.
Catch The Stand on Prime Video.
