The ending of the 2025 *Fantastic Four* movie might have revealed the plot of the upcoming *Avengers: Doomsday*. Robert Downey Jr. made his first on-screen appearance as Doctor Doom in the post-credits scene of *Fantastic Four*, where he was shown watching over young Franklin Richards, hinting that Doom plans to kidnap the incredibly powerful hero.
Rumors started circulating recently about the plot of the upcoming *Doomsday* story. Reports in mid-August indicated that the story would involve Doctor Doom kidnapping Franklin Richards and using his powers to fuel a plan to end dangerous incursions across the Marvel Multiverse.
It’s still unknown how this will impact the next movie, but Doctor Doom believes he’s the protagonist. It appears Franklin will play a crucial role in Doom’s plans, especially concerning the many different timelines within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
In the upcoming story, Avengers: Doomsday, Earth’s heroes will face their greatest challenge yet. Doctor Doom is launching an attack from across different universes, forcing the Avengers to travel through multiple realities. During their journey, they’ll encounter other superhero teams, including the Fantastic Four (recently seen in Fantastic Four: First Steps) and the classic X-Men.
The new movie, *Doomsday*, is scheduled to be released in theaters on December 18, 2026. The Russo Brothers are directing this *Avengers* film, which will star Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom. Joining him will be Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, and Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, all facing off against the iconic villain.
How Does Franklin Richards Factor Into Doctor Doom’s Avengers: Doomsday Plan?
In *Avengers: Doomsday*, Doctor Doom believes he’s acting for the greater good. He wants to fix the Multiverse by stopping incursions – events where universes crash into each other, resulting in the destruction of one of them.
Although he presents himself as a hero, Downey’s plan clearly positions him as the villain in an Avengers-style narrative. By eliminating possibilities in the timeline, Doom would be responsible for the deaths of billions who would never even have the chance to live.
It appears he’ll need assistance from Franklin Richards to accomplish this, based on how the *Fantastic Four: First Steps* story concluded.
Doom’s kidnapping of Franklin creates a compelling reason for the Fantastic Four to become involved in the situation. Franklin’s disappearance would naturally drive his parents to desperately search for him, pulling the team into the conflict.
But why exactly does Doom need Franklin specifically? And what are his plans?
Franklin Richards is known as one of the most powerful characters in Marvel Comics. As he matures, he becomes the superhero Powerhouse, gaining the ability to alter reality itself and even create entirely new dimensions.
The young hero in the MCU appears to have similar abilities to his comic book counterpart. He’s one of the rare characters who can travel through and reshape the Multiverse however he chooses.
This explains why Doctor Doom would want him on his side. If the stories are true and Doom is trying to eliminate threats from across the Multiverse, someone with Franklin’s abilities would be a huge asset to the villain.
Doom might use Franklin Richards’ abilities to travel the Multiverse. Franklin can bend reality itself, which would let Doom easily jump between universes and eliminate any realities he deems necessary – essentially acting like a vengeful version of the TVA.
Perhaps the character could travel between Earths to locations where incursions are happening, or are about to happen, and try to prevent these realities from colliding.
This explains why the character calls himself a hero – he believes he’s rescuing alternate versions of Earth. But, as hinted in the summary for the upcoming *Doomsday* story, his attempts to fix these problems will probably cause a much larger, Multiverse-wide disaster.
Doctor Doom could also use Franklin’s abilities to gain more followers. Unlike other Avengers villains who are limited to allies within their own universe, Doom now has the advantage of multiversal travel, thanks to having Franklin Richards with him.
This suggests he might take the child on journeys through different realities, seeking out powerful versions of people to help him free the multiverse.
There’s speculation that the movie will feature corrupted versions of popular Marvel characters, potentially bringing back actors like Robert Downey Jr. to play villains – a way to reintroduce familiar faces in a darker role.
Maybe his role is to repeatedly save the universe from threats, always being seen as the hero—even as he tries to fix everything—only for it all to ultimately collapse, leading into the upcoming *Avengers: Secret Wars* movie (scheduled for release on December 17, 2027).
The current storyline began with the conclusion of this summer’s *Fantastic Four* movie, where Doctor Doom put his plan into motion to kidnap Reed and Sue Richards’ young child.
