‘The Faculty’ Remake Set at Miramax With Robert Rodriguez Producing, ‘Companion’ Filmmaker Drew Hancock Writing Script (EXCLUSIVE)

Miramax is planning to revisit “The Faculty,” their 1998 science fiction thriller that was both a commercial success and gained a devoted fanbase, with a fresh take on the story. The original director, Robert Rodriguez, will be overseeing the production of this new version.

Emerging screenwriter Drew Hancock is penning the script for a remake. His first film as both writer and director, “Companion,” premieres in theaters this weekend and has received excellent feedback. The production company responsible for “Barbarian” and Zach Cregger’s upcoming movie “Weapons,” BoulderLight, is backing this new project.

The initial release of “The Faculty” centered around a band of students who started to doubt that their unusual school staff were concealing a lethal mystery. The debut film, written by Kevin Williamson, featured Jordana Brewster, Clea DuVall, Josh Hartnett, Shawn Hatosy, Usher Raymond, Elijah Wood, and Jon Stewart (before his “Daily Show” stint). It raked in $63.2 million at the box office and has gained a dedicated fanbase over the years.

Rodriguez has just completed directing “Spy Kids: Armageddon” and “The Hypnotic,” a Ben Affleck thriller, for Netflix. Other notable works under his belt include “El Mariachi,” “From Dusk till Dawn,” and “Sin City.”

Last year, Miramax experienced a change in leadership as Jonathan Glickman, previously president of MGM’s Motion Picture Group, took over as CEO, following Bill Block. Before this transition, the studio was under Block’s leadership. The company boasts an extensive library that Miramax is working to rejuvenate, featuring films such as “Chicago,” “No Country for Old Men,” “Scary Movie,” and “The English Patient.” In line with this effort, a reboot of “Scary Movie” is in the works and is set to hit theaters in 2026.

BoulderLight, established by J.D. Lifshitz and Raphael Margules, is managed by Range Media Partners. On the other hand, Rodriguez is handled by Robert Newman at WME, while Hancock is overseen by both Range and United Talent Agency (UTA).
