Fans of The Elder Scrolls have been eagerly awaiting The Elder Scrolls 6 since Skyrim came out in 2011 – that’s over 15 years now, and the anticipation only builds. However, it’s fair to question how high those expectations should be. Bethesda Game Studios hasn’t released a truly groundbreaking game since Skyrim. While Fallout 4 (2015) was well-received, it wasn’t a genre-defining title. Fallout 76 (2018) eventually improved, but launched to negative reviews. And their most recent release, Starfield (2023), is a solid game, but doesn’t reach the level of innovation seen in Skyrim. A recent report suggests that the Bethesda Game Studios that once led the RPG world may no longer exist in the same form.
Kurt Kuhlmann, a lead designer for The Elder Scrolls and considered a key expert on the game’s history and background, left Bethesda Game Studios in 2023 after working there for over 20 years. His departure was a significant loss for the company.
Problems After Skyrim
Kuhlmann believes the issues at Bethesda Game Studios started shortly after the release of Skyrim. He suggests the studio hasn’t been the same since, as the planned transition to The Elder Scrolls 6 after Fallout 4 never materialized. Instead, they developed Fallout 76 and then Starfield. While it’s unclear who made those decisions, Kuhlmann feels whoever did made two unsuccessful calls. Ultimately, he argues that the studio’s atmosphere shifted significantly following the huge success of Skyrim.
Over the years, I’ve consistently heard concerns that Bethesda Game Studios has been declining. These concerns generally point to bad leadership choices, the loss of important employees, and issues with how projects are managed as the main reasons.
What does this all mean for Bethesda Game Studios and The Elder Scrolls 6? If I were a big fan of the series, this news would be concerning. The departure of a key figure like Kuhlmann is a definite warning sign. It now seems unlikely that The Elder Scrolls 6 will reach the same level of quality as previous installments like Skyrim, Oblivion, or Morrowind. A more realistic expectation is that it will be similar in quality to Starfield. The team that created those classic Elder Scrolls games is no longer at the studio.
