After waiting since the initial announcement in 2018, fans of The Elder Scrolls 6 may be losing patience following the release of a new trailer from Bethesda.
It’s a running joke in the gaming world that Bethesda has repeatedly re-released Skyrim since its original launch in 2011. Now, they’ve announced an updated version for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2. While some gamers are excited, others aren’t thrilled about seeing the game re-released yet again.

I’m a little embarrassed to say this makes me want to replay Skyrim! I enjoy playing it around Christmas, and this feels like a good reason to start a new game. However, we also need to think about the fans who have been waiting for almost ten years for news about The Elder Scrolls 6 – they’re already feeling anxious.
“I thought this was a joke but wow, there it is,” wrote one fan over on the TES6 subreddit.
Another added: “I am 100% convinced Todd checks this subreddit and decided to troll us.”
Someone else pointed out that the game will continue to be re-released as long as people keep purchasing it. They called it a smart business move, essentially printing money at this point.
With a mysterious statue hinting at a major announcement at The Game Awards, fans of The Elder Scrolls 6 were already incredibly excited when this trailer dropped. And that’s really saying something!
“HE CAN’T KEEP GETTING AWAY WITH IT,” one YouTube viewer wrote.
“We got another Skyrim before GTA 6,” another joked.
So How Many Times Has Skyrim Been Released Now?
It’s a meme for a reason
It’s easy to think the Skyrim meme is an exaggeration, but it’s actually quite accurate. Here’s just how many times the game has been re-released.
- 2011 – Skyrim releases for PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3
- 2013 – Skyrim Legendary Edition launches with all DLC included
- 2016 – Skyrim Special Edition lands on PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4
- 2017 – Skyrim Special Edition hits Nintendo Switch
- 2017/2018 – Skyrim VR is released across various headsets
- 2021 – Skyrim Anniversary Edition is released on all current-gen platforms
- 2025 – Skyrim Anniversary Edition comes to Nintendo Switch 2
Look, I’ve put so many hours into Skyrim – it’s been amazing, but honestly, it’s had its run. I think it’s time to stop squeezing every last bit of content out of it and let it rest. Seriously, Todd Howard, we’re all ready for The Elder Scrolls 6 now! Let’s move on and see what’s next.
