The DCU Is Officially Making Good on James Gunn’s Promise To Vary Each Project’s Style

As a DCU fan, I’ve been really enjoying what James Gunn has brought to the universe so far! Everything we’ve seen – Creature Commandos, Superman, and Peacemaker – has had his fingerprints all over it, whether he wrote it, directed it, or was heavily involved. It’s cool to see that familiar team-of-underdogs vibe from his work on Guardians of the Galaxy and The Suicide Squad in both Creature Commandos and Peacemaker. Superman felt a little different, but you could still see his style shining through. And that’s great as a director! But if the DCU is really going to become the diverse universe it promises to be, we need to see lots of different creative voices and styles, not just one person’s vision. I’m excited to see what other filmmakers bring to the table!

When James Gunn began building the DC Universe, he pledged that each movie and show would have its own unique feel, unlike the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Many feel that despite the variety of Marvel films and series – like Black Panther, Werewolf by Night, and She-Hulk: Attorney at Law – they often share a similar tone. Whether that’s true or not, it’s become how many people see Marvel, and the DCU has an opportunity to be different by embracing diverse styles and storytelling, mirroring the varied nature of comic books.

The DCU’s 2026 Slate (& Why It’s So Important)

The upcoming film Supergirl, scheduled for release on June 26, 2026, shares a similar energetic style with James Gunn’s work on both Superman and Guardians of the Galaxy. However, this rock and roll aesthetic is also characteristic of director Craig Gillespie’s previous films, including Fright Night, Cruella, and the popular series Pam and Tommy. Gillespie’s experience with films like I, Tonya makes him a strong choice to direct a story about a complicated female lead, but it also suggests Gunn intentionally chose a director with a similar creative vision.

Early concerns that James Gunn was making all DC Universe projects fit his personal style seem less valid after the trailer for Lanterns was released. Many fans actually seem disappointed that Gunn has given series creators Damon Lindelof, Chris Mundy, and Tom King so much creative freedom. Gunn was serious when he said Lanterns would feel like True Detective with a touch of Yellowstone. The series doesn’t resemble Gunn’s past work, and it’s also a departure from what fans anticipated for a Green Lantern show.

The next film, Clayface, is scheduled for release on October 24, 2026. While no trailer is available yet, it’s been described as a gruesome, R-rated horror movie. It’s unusual for a major superhero franchise to go this route, especially with a lesser-known Batman villain. Clayface wasn’t originally planned for the DC Universe, but James Gunn was impressed by director Mike Flanagan’s idea and added it to the schedule. This demonstrates a willingness to embrace creative ideas and different voices, which is key for the DCU’s success.

The DCU Can Thrive By Embracing Different Styles

The new DC Universe (DCU) is starting off well, with each release under James Gunn earning positive feedback – a significant improvement over the rocky beginnings of the previous DC Extended Universe (DCEU). Films like Man of Steel, Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, and Suicide Squad all received negative reviews. However, for the DCU to truly succeed and feel like the DC Comics we know and love, it needs more than just James Gunn’s vision. Gunn should remember what worked at Marvel Studios: the MCU’s unique style wasn’t created by one person, but by a team of talented filmmakers – including himself, Jon Favreau, Ryan Coogler, and others – working together.

As a huge DC fan, I’m really seeing 2026 as a pivotal year for the new DC Universe. It’ll tell us a lot about James Gunn’s approach. Will he allow filmmakers the creative freedom to put their own spin on things – kind of like how different artists and writers would contribute to a great comic book run, while still keeping everything connected? Or will he be super hands-on with each project, similar to Kevin Feige with the MCU, or even how George Lucas was with the later Star Wars films? So far, the announced projects suggest he’s sticking to his promise of diverse stories within the DCU, which is really encouraging.
