James Gunn is rebooting the DC Universe with a new cast of actors, but The Flash hasn’t appeared yet. Although the first phase of the reboot, “Gods and Monsters,” will feature established heroes, it still leaves plenty of opportunities to introduce the Flash’s story.
As a huge DC fan, I stumbled across some amazing fan art recently! Everyone knows Grant Gustin as Barry Allen, but someone on social media, @horrific.heroics, imagined Jacob Bertrand – yes, the one from Cobra Kai – as Wally West for the new DC Universe. It’s seriously cool, and I had to share – check it out below!
The Flash’s costume on the Netflix series is based on the look Wally West wore starting in 2016, during the DC Rebirth comics. While this isn’t his first live-action appearance – Keiynan Lonsdale played Wally in season 2 of The Flash TV show – it’s the version of the suit fans will recognize from that era.
Late in 2025, James Gunn was jokingly asked about the Flash in the new DC Universe, specifically whether he preferred blonde or red-haired speedsters – a reference to Barry Allen and Wally West. Gunn simply responded that he liked both blonde and redhead heroes.
After The Flash movie didn’t perform well in theaters, there aren’t any current plans for another film featuring the character. When asked about the future of the Flash in 2024, James Gunn said they were pausing development on any new projects.
In a 2024 interview with ScreenRant, Bertrand was asked if he’d consider joining the superhero genre, especially since his Cobra Kai co-star, Xolo Maridueña, is reprising his role as Blue Beetle in James Gunn’s new franchise. Here’s what he had to say:
I haven’t really gotten into superheroes yet – I didn’t read many comics as a kid. Xolo is the one who got me thinking about them, actually. From the moment I met him, he was always talking about wanting to play Blue Beetle. It’s great that he pursued his passion and landed the role! If I ever got the chance to be in a superhero movie, I’d definitely want to play the villain – someone trying to take down Blue Beetle. That would be hilarious, I think.
With established Justice League characters like Hal Jordan appearing in the DC Universe – Kyle Chandler will play him in the upcoming HBO series Lanterns – many fans believe Barry Allen (The Flash) will be portrayed as being around the same age. This would logically point to Wally West as the likely choice to play The Flash in future projects.
There’s no reason Barry Allen and Wally West couldn’t both be the Flash at the same time, which would have allowed for a more expansive Flash Family presence in movies – something the DC Extended Universe never achieved. In contrast, the Arrowverse TV show featured almost every speedster character from the comics.
The DC Universe (DCU) is back this summer, starting with Supergirl on June 26th. HBO’s Lanterns will follow, though its release date hasn’t been announced yet.
