The Conjuring’s 2 Best Spinoffs Are Losing Their Streaming Home Ahead of the Prequel

Two popular, but controversial, series are leaving their current streaming platform just before the release of a new prequel. While the story of Ed and Lorraine Warren has reportedly concluded with the film Last Rites, the franchise plans to continue with different stories in the future.

Fans of The Nun and The Nun II have a limited time left to stream both movies on Netflix. Both films will be removed from the platform on January 1st, so viewers have until December 31st to watch them.

Released in 2018, The Nun is a continuation of the story started in The Conjuring 2 and the fifth installment in The Conjuring Universe series. Directed by Corin Hardy and written by Gary Dauberman, the film takes place over 20 years before the events of The Conjuring 2 and acts as a kind of origin story.

Starring alongside Bonnie Aarons as the demonic entity, The Nun features Demián Bichir as Father Burke, Taissa Farmiga as Sister Irene, and Jonas Bloquet as Frenchie (also known as Maurice). The film’s main cast also includes Michael Smiley, Ingrid Bisu, Charlotte Hope, Maria Obretin, Sandra Teles, August Maturo, and Jack Falk.

Even though critics didn’t like it, The Nun was a huge financial success, earning over $366 million on a budget of just $22 million. Because of this success, a sequel, The Nun II, was released in 2023.

Directed by Michael Chaves and written by Ian Goldberg, Richard Naing, and Akela Cooper, The Nun II continues the story four years after the first film. Taissa Farmiga and Joseph Bloquet return to face the demonic Valak once again.

Similar to the first movie, The Nun II earned over $269.5 million at the box office, significantly exceeding its $38.5 million production cost. It performed even better than the previous installment in The Conjuring series.

Currently, The Nun II has a 51% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 137 reviews from critics. Viewers who have seen the film give it a 72% score. The original The Nun currently has a 24% critic score and a 35% audience score, calculated from 206 critic reviews and over 5,000 viewer ratings.

What’s Next for The Conjuring Franchise After Last Rites?

The latest installment in the series was a huge financial success, earning close to $495 million on a $55 million budget. However, it concluded the storyline for Ed and Elizabeth Warren, played by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga. Luckily, the characters aren’t gone for good – a new prequel film is in the works that will bring them back to the big screen.
